With the latest firmware for the ZVM, Creative removed FM recording capabilities. Whether it was forward thinking to prevent a lawsuit, or direct pressure from the RIAA we won't know. For those that use FM recording from time to time this is definitely unfortunate. I decided to see how easy/hard it was to downgrade to an older firmware.

I currently have 1.50.02 installed, and the download files for older FW's on my pc. If you open up one of the older files you'll see the above screen.

After you hit upgrade you will get a warning telling you that the FW on your player is newer. Press Yes to continue

The program starts working and only takes 5 minutes to do the downgrade process. After that, the player automatically goes to the "Rebuilding Library" screen. When that's done, you have successfully downgraded and features like FM recording come back. Upgrading back to the latest is not a problem either.

You can download older FW's HERE

As a cautionary warning, you stll have to downgrade at your own risk. To me the process was extremely easy, but it's really up to you.

Michael,

Would you mind adding this to the Information Portal and sticky it?

Ahhh.. at home in the Information Portal.. think I'll put my feet up by the fireplace..

Well, all I can say is that when SkyNet becomes self-aware and takes control of all your ZVM's, because you upgraded to this firmware.. you'll be sorry...

..or is the Cylons? I always forget.....

Working through the backdoor of DRM'ed music subscription services and invading ZVM's worldwide via a firmware update.. SkyNet has now become fully self-aware....

That's the only thing in our favor. None of this stuff works as well as they would wish. Big Brother may be watching but it is on an inferior ipod screen and the details are blurry. And as for listening, they are using the standard zvm earphones and we know how well those work.

Anyone have an adverse effects downgrading? I upgraded to the newest firmware last week thinking it would speed the player up. Some post on the forum say there is a faster bootup time, but I only see this if the player turns off automatically, and I power it up a short time later. Overall, it doesnt seem like much of an improvement.

Plus, since they removed the newest fw, im curious if I should go back.

If it's working , I'd leave it alone.. since the 1.50.02 fw has been pulled.. it's a sure bet that there will be a replacement coming along... there's always a danger, albeit remote, that updating firmware can cause un-recoverable problems.. I'd leave it dapmonkey.. and see where this goes..
