Hi

Quick query.

Just updated my european player with the US firmware, but on checking the player it still has the 'e' at the end of the firmware version and the volume doesn't appear to have been affected.

Any ideas why this may be?

Thanks

Erm, hate to be the one to break this to you, but you haven't put the US firmware on it. If you had, the volume would be sensible, as mine is now and not stuck on "just above traffic noise" as it used to be.

Try doing it again. The 'e' will disappearwhen it's changed.

Yaqh, you must have either a)downloaded the correct firmware, or b)accidentally reflashed with the europoean one. Takk is right, just try it again, and the e should go away and the volume should go higher.

Welcome to epiZENter Evilash.

These are the general instructions found in our Information Portal of how to get the US firmware:

1| Download the latest American firmware update (currently v1.30.02 download here)

2| Detach the Zen Vision:M player from your computer, and ensure that the unit is off.
3| Slide the Power switch towards the Power icon and hold the switch in the Power On position.
4| Push the end of a pin-like object (for example, a straightened paper clip) into the reset hole, press gently and remove.
5| Release the Power switch when the Creative logo appears. The Recovery Mode appears and has these options:
* Clean Up (Performs a disk scan on the player's hard disk, it will not affect music files)
* Format All (Formats the players hard disk - Note: all contents will be lost)
* Reload Firmware (Reloads the Operating System on the Zen. Select this option ONLY if there is a firmware available to reload.)
* Reboot (Reboots the device).
6| Select reload firmware
7| Once done connect the player to your pc and run the American firmware upgrade
8| Leave it to do this and reboot, then rebuild, and voila all done

Life's soooo much better when you can actually hear the thing that's playing, yes?!

It will certainly be nice to drown out the traffic noise on my daily stroll to work through London!

The difference is actually fairly startling. I didn't realise just how big the restriction on these things was.
It's nice to be able to take responsibility for my hearing myself!

When you say "rebuild" do you mean I'll have to reload all of my music and videos onto the ZVM after doing this? Thanks.

OK. I'm stuck. I did steps 1-5, but when I connect to the USB cable the firmware program and Zen Explorer doesn't recognize the ZVM. HELP!

DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU'VE INSTALLED THE WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 11 BETA!

The process won't work! The update program won't find the player. Luckily there's another PC in the house from which I could complete the update.

From Solution ID # 16737 on the Creative UK KnowledgeBase:
"If you try to upgrade the firmware on your Creative ZEN after you have installed the beta release of Windows Media Player 11, the Creative firmware upgrade software may not recognize your device. In this case, please uninstall Windows Media Player 11, update the Creative firmware, and reinstall Windows Media Player 11. Creative plans to address this issue in future firmware updates."

Uninstalling the beta *DID NOT WORK* for me!

DO NOT attempt this if you've installed the 11 Beta - you will potentially brick your player until the issue's resolved or you reinstall Windows!

This means rebuild in the sense of appying new settings from firmware, in a sense re-configure. You wont loose any data. It's just the word Creative use, hence why it's in the guide I made that was quoted above you'll love the new volume, makes it so much better.
