Creative introduces the ZEN Style series

Creative has announced a new line of players called the "ZEN Style" series. The new players, as the name would suggest, are quite stylish come in a variety of colors. They also share many of the same design elements as the 3rd gen Vado HD. Here's a quick run-down of the new series.

ZEN X-Fi Style

The name may throw you off, since it's closer to the original ZEN, than the ZEN X-fi, at least in terms of looks. The ZX-Fi Style has a 2.4" display, X-Fi sound enhancements, a built-in speaker, and 25 hours of battery life. Sadly, the device doesn't appear to have an expansion slot.

Specs:

  • Capacity: 8, 16, and 32GB
  • Display: 2.4" TFT (320 x 240 resolution, 262K colors)
  • Audio: MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, and WAV
  • Video: MPEG-4 SP, WMV, Xvid, Divx (up to 640 x 480 resolution)
  • X-Fi sound enhancements/Built-in speaker/TV-out (with optional cable)
  • Extras: FM tuner, Voice recorder, RSS reader (requires PC sync)
  • Battery life: 25 hours for audio, and 5 hours for video
  • Dimensions: 83.6mm x 48.7mm x 11.7mm
  • Pricing: S$159 - 249.00 Singapore dollars or roughly $114 - 178US

ZEN Style 100 and 300

The ZEN Style is a compact player, with roughly the same dimensions as the ZEN Mozaic. There are two models to choose from, the 100, and 300, with the latter having an FM tuner, and a built-in speaker.

Specs

  • Capacity: 4, 8, and 16GB
  • Display: 1.8" TFT (128 x 160 resolution, 65K colors)
  • Audio: MP3, WMA, WAV, and Audible
  • Video: Proprietary format requiring transcoding
  • FM tuner and Built speaker (Style 300 model only)
  • Voice recorder
  • Battery life: 32 hours of Audio, 4 hours of Video
  • Dimensions: 79.5mm x 40mm x13.6 mm
  • Pricing: S$89 - 159.00 Singapore dollars, or roughly $64 - 114US

The new Style series doesn't really bring anything we haven't seen before. Rather, these players are re-skinned versions of older players, with a few new tricks. The new designs are certainly more mainstream, compared to something like the Mozaic however, and the prices are pretty reasonable too. These aren't exactly the players we've been waiting for, but hopefully it'll provide Creative with some revenue so that they can make the players we've really been wishing for.

Press Release

Thanks Musik!

yeah
I still find it strange to see the news zen's
cause like micha said, not a lot of new tricks

I like the battery life though, especially on the style 100 and 300
I think the battery of the xfi style is going to drain faster due to the xfi ....

I don't think I'm going to buy one of these anytime soon
still playing my songs with the all favourite zen vision M

hopefully the next stop indeed is a ziimp3/mp4/phone

The Zen Xfi style is the size of the ZEX X-Fi2 with the orginal ZEN X-Fi interface.

Why couldn't Creative just issue an updated Firmware for the ZEN X-Fi?

Are those formats on the first player after transcoding?

I think I'd like that X-fi style as it doesn't have those tiny buttons. If I hadn't bought my Zen 32 this past January I would jump on that new 32. And since they're rehashes of previous models, noone should have to wait for 3 firmware updates before they get it right. I really would never have used the LAN on the X-fi, and the only reason I didn't get it is I didn't think I'd like those tiny buttons.
These will be good quality players at a decent price. Maybe Creative will one day come out with something innovative to all of their fans. I'm just thrilled I can get a quality high capacity player for not too much cash.I hope these sell well.

Exactly why would anyone want the xfi style?
Less battery, no sd slot, no wifi, no ep 830 for free

The zen style thing might appeal to some though.. it isn't as ugly as the mozaic.

Good timing Creative. I was looking for a decent player.

I think the Vado should've been integrated into the Style series. It looks like it would fit. Just add a bit of thickness and SD support.

The X-Fi Style is is basically a flash Zen Vision:M. It's what I expected the original Zen (the flash followup to the Vision:M) to be, except for the worse screen and the addition of a speaker. Two years ago I would have bought this without a second thought. Even now I think I would buy this before the X-Fi2. Hard to beat the price for 32 MB, in a couple of months this will be available for <US$150.

I really don't like the right-sided button design that all Zen's have adopted since 2007. I bet they are a bit tricky if you are left handed. Why not just have an excelerometer, that rotates the screen to the users preference?

I'm left handed and never had a problem with my Zen, it's not like your finger placement has to be real precise.
These have no SD card slots, but from all the flack that Creative gets from the card slots they'v had, it doesn't surprise me. I haven't used the card slot on my Zen 32, but figured if I thought I wanted to carry video around,I'd put the videw on the SD card.
As for lack of nice phones, Creative was probably the only ones that included decent phones, didn't seem to help with people constantly nagging about their products.

ABOUT TIME we got some news on some new mp3 players.

BUT whats with no external memory!!?!? it really just seems like a refresh but it does look good but It does make you wonder whats the deal with the zii chips.

Also I love the style of the vado 3rd gen though i felt it wasn't a big enough step forward from the first iteration. the zen style does seem to take a lot from the vado with the buttons looking rather familar (big button for record etc) but im all for tactile navigation

of the two, im more inclined to grab the smaller version. Im not quite sure how small the mozaic is but has anyone used the mozaic as a fitness mp3 player, if so would zen style be perfect enough for it?

I want something as small as the sansa clip + realistically but if this is reasonable to use then I might get it (at least it doesnt have a shite joystick like the zen v+ even though it was the perfect mini zen vision m ) as I haven't heard to many good things about the stone plus UI.

in the end, I trust creative for SQ and I hope for a review of that as that really important to me. looks like they've gone a little nostalgia (mmmm vision m). It seems they were hiding these away 2 years ago and creative forgot to release it. I was about to give up on them and get a refurbished zune 30gb.

Will now give the zen style a close look at but whats with not having the zen style in 30gb?

lastly the back looks quite boring and would have like to have seen the ripples but it's all good

About the only thing negative I could say is the back is plastic. My Zen has a nice metal back with ripples. The X-fi on is all plastic. I can get over that as it's just a cover. I could see a Zen X-fi in my future, maybe next Christmas when the 32 is on sale for $120.00. I really like my present Zen though and I think the sound quality is great through my Grado headphones. Also my Portapros.

^portapros eh. I wanted to get those, but I heard that hair can get stuck in the metal bands easily.

I haven't had a problem with my hair and portapros, though I heard others have. My hair isn't short either.
Zentson, the Mozaic and then so is the Zen style, are very small. They are not as small as the clip, but I'm sure they're small enough for what you want. Consider the pics above and the screen is only 1.8", they're very small.

ROFL wilfried!!!! (made me smile when I saw the link address viva la Vision M )

Hey slackerdude thanks, thinking about it, you're right, its not that big at all and having a (hopefully) intuitive interface in comparison to the stone plus will help a lot.

Apple updates its software seldom on hardware... Creative updates its hardware seldom on software...
Apple concentrates on one piece of great hardware... not easy to be emulated by any company and be a leader in this.
Creative concentrates on many pieces of normal hardware... easily emulated by any company and easily thrown out by others.
It's ironic that Creative is just a hardware company with high ignorance on hardware capabilities, software developments and design developments.
The true fact is that it can't rely solely on hardware to compete with the big Apple now. It needs to bring in more developments which we all wants to see. Zii products and more developments on its own platform can only change Creative now. Hope to see a true and powerful Zii product one day.
