[ image disabled ]I will admit, when the Zii was first announced, I laughed a little at the name. It sounded like a complete rip-off of the Nintendo Wii. Later, we learned the name was a shortened form for "ZEN II". Whether that's true or not, it seems like Nintendo sees enough similarity to do some patenting of their own. On October 30th, they trademarked the word "Zii" which they claim will be used for "video games and other electronic devices". There isn't any proof that Nintendo is actively trying to block Creative from releasing any Zii related products in Japan, but a popular and well-informed gaming blog called Kotaku updated their article on the matter to say this: "Update: Looks like Nintendo is attempting to block the branding of the Zee [sic] EGG in Japan." Creative has already trademarked "Zii" in the US, but it'll be interesting to see how this plays out from here. If Creative wants to release any Zii product sin Japan, it'll likely have to be under a different name. Vado HD 8GB Red & Accessory Pack

Dec 15 (2009) 06:25PM | Indeed. It would be nice if Nintendo offered hardware that included the Zii rather than Nvidia's Tegra. I think both are worthy for the real next gen of Nintendo's handhelds |

Dec 15 (2009) 07:18PM | It'd be fun to play games on a Zii powered Nintendo handheld indeed. I would like... go completely mad (in a positive, scary looking way) if one was to be released. |

Dec 16 (2009) 09:08AM | Aside from the occasional optical disc or internet fiber optic cable signaling development. Japan lost it's innovative might for at least the last decade. More innovation (that actually makes it into PRODUCTS) is coming out of places such as India, Taiwan & China, than Japan these days. |

Dec 17 (2009) 10:34AM ![]() | also nintendo Nintendo trademarks Bii, Cii, Oii, Yii and Zii What about the rest of the alphabet Nintendo. sheesh. there's aii.. dii.. eii. fiii. giii lol its the zii chip anyways it can always be called the Zen II.. but still i dont know if companies should be allowed to trademark names like this unless they actually use the trademark - that's how ridiculous i think trademarks and patents have become nowadays. a way to abuse the system. marketing it a different name in japan wont be too much of a problem. E.g the way canon has marketed the XXXD brands of cameras e.g 400D, Kiss, rebel. most adverts will need to be redesigned with japanese characters so investment in advertising and box design will need to be done anyways. |

Dec 19 (2009) 07:01AM | It is open knowledge that Zii stands for Zen II, and the mark is marketed for its media processing prowess as a platform. It does not intrude the gaming consumer market that WII is the dominate brand. Such restrictive protection by nintendo is unneccessary and prohibitive to the development for a common cause. I hope this does not affect the introduction of Zii as a consumer product. |

Jan 25 (2010) 07:33AM | I don't agree that "Nintendo trademarks "Zii" in Japan, are they trying to block Creative?". Japan's Electronics and great games are related to Japan. Japan is very famous for their electronics products and great electronics items. [ edited Jan 25 (2010) 07:35AM ] |
