![]() In what was thought to be just another Annual General Meeting, Creative surprised many by announcing its plan of entering the e-book market. Displaying a working model of its first e-book reader - tentatively named the MediaBook (no, not the one above) - it features a touchscreen, text-to-speech function and an SD memory card slot. Running on the company's Zii Technology, the MediaBook will also be internet-enabled to give the user a multimedia experience. Creative is already a late comer to the already crowded e-book market with products like Amazon's Kindle, Sony's e-reader and Barnes & Noble's Nook. But Creative hopes to differentiate itself by providing more than what the current e-books can offer. Describing the Kindle as "just another electronic device which displays books in text", the Creative's e-book will harness "videos, pictures, text and services in one device that supports a media-rich experience." said Mr Willie Png, Creative's VP of strategic business. As of now, Creative is already in talk with 10 international and local publishers to provide content for the MediaBook. On the menu are fiction, newspaper, magazines, education materials and textbooks. Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) - Singapore largest publisher which publishes 17 newspapers and more than 100 magazines could be one of the local content provider. "We are discussing with Creative how SPH, as a significant content provider in Singapore, can provide what it has - stories, images, videos or radio programmes - for the e-reader." Wow, would the MediaBook change the future for Creative? Unlike the current e-books that is available now in the market, the Creative's MediaBook seem to be an all-in-one multimedia tablet. Besides reading your e-books and newspaper on the device, you will also able to Facebook and Twitter on the go, watch videos and view photos on the large touchscreen. Now that's one device i will willing shell out money for. It has been a long time since Creative came up with anything relatively exciting (with the Zii EGG looking no where near at being hatched) and I think the MediaBook might be the product that changes everything for Creative. Here's why. Creative is not new to the educational business in Singapore. It produces eletronic dictionary, educational software which are approved by the Ministry of Education in Singapore. With the MediaBook, the furture of Singapore's education landscape could be very different with every student uses the MediaBook which replaces the traditional textbooks. With the Media Development Authority (MDA) naming Creative as a partner of its "FutureBooks" initiative, it means that Creative will get support in funding and introductions to potential content providers. And by positioning it as an all-in-one device, anyone could find a need for the MediaBook. Think of it as a ZEN Vision W up-sized with a touchscreen and SD slot. Tell us what you think of the MediaBook! Like it or hate it? Hit or Miss? We want to hear your thoughts on this!

Oct 30 (2009) 09:08PM ![]() | so its like a netbook (with zii) but in this form factor. It primarily does ebooks but it will do other things like video? It'll be interesting to see what screen it uses and the all important battery life. this area is getting increasingly crowded with the all in one microsoft courier tablet, asus ebook reader among them. I don't think it has taken off in australia as I've not seen any of these here.. Something Creative should think about is broadening outwards instead of the others being so US centric. I personally don't have a use for these. I still prefer a book and even the rumoured courier (a glorified planner) I still don't need something like this. |

Oct 30 (2009) 09:57PM | I will admit, I firstly thought this was the ziiSD thing again, but it seems as if its purely for education at this point, but nothing would stop it from jumping to the SG market at large. Not totally sold on it, but it will create revenue. Every company has to pad their bottom line, and this looks like it should be profitable. |

Oct 31 (2009) 12:15AM | It would be good if the video was used for news broadcasts, so you could have books, newspapers and video news whenever you wanted it. |

Oct 31 (2009) 07:01PM | I do not see the real proposition. Is it a Netbook, an e-reader, a multimedia computer or what? I think it is sitting in the middle of nowhere. On the one hand, Kindle and Nook's proposition is to read books with an innovative e-ink that can make the battery last forever (inclusive weeks with a single charge) and it does not reflect light for a comfortable reading. On the other hand, netbooks are super movable computers that can do most of the tasks a regular computer could do but at half the size, weight and price. This Zii seems to be either a non-capable netbook or a charge-me while you read e-reader. Let's wait and see, I hope that Creative comes with something interesting. |

Nov 01 (2009) 01:35AM | Since creative doesn't seem to have enough confidence in releasing a PMP first.. I have doubts that it could elevate the e-tablet market with any innovations that haven't already come to pass. Pricing & partnerships are key to getting sales in this area.. this is a much more difficult moving target to pull readers away from paper. Also, as far as etablet devices are concerned, if you thought the PMP fans can be picky and critical... you ain't seen nothing yet with this micro niche... and these people DO vote with their dollars as opposed to the gotta have innovation of mp3. Nobody gotta have an etablet, so it's very much a gadget imo. If nothing else, please include an infrared port, so it can at least also serve as a very expensive universal remote control! Nov 01 (2009) 09:11AM ![]() | Wow, i didn't see this coming! More and more I've been considering getting an E-book reader, and it's clear that it's becoming a hot trend of late with the Kindle, and the Nook, as well as rumors of Apple making their own. I think there's a lot of potential for Creative to incorporate some of their multimedia advantages into one of these devices, something I feel the others are missing. I can't wait! lol Zensen, we did have our biggest news drought, which i do apologize for. There wasn't anything new from Creative in a while, so I'm glad to see this news. As CES approaches we'll no doubt see more exciting stuff coming out. [ edited Nov 01 (2009) 09:14AM ] |

Nov 02 (2009) 08:22AM | they'll never release it, just like that haven't released the Zii Egg for consumers. They are horrible at they're timing of releasing things. How long have we known about the Zii Egg and nothing far as a hint of it being released to consumers. Now an e-book. When do they plane to release these things after the holidays when everybody's bought the Nook and other powered Androied devices such as phones. Creative has never had good timing. And I'm Creative fan I seriously wanted the Zii Egg for Christmas, but may have to wait another whole year. |

Nov 02 (2009) 12:32PM | I like what I saw in the video, even though it was little. Bottom line is very simple. A company has to decide from where the main flow of income is going to come. An e-reader should be sold like the cellphones in US: small amount paid up front (if not free on simpler models), and then the service would pay for future development, etc. Kindle from Amazon looks too much expensive for a proprietary platform. If the e-reader is going to get me connected to the Internet through my wireless router or even wired, then I would not mind paying a little bit more for it, but in that case, no proprietary licensing of contents should charge me another arm and leg. I love competition, as it keeps good things coming at affordable prices. |

Nov 03 (2009) 06:11PM | Well, how about the battery life? It must be good at least for 1 day (12 hours) but I doubt it. I didn't choose iPhone because of its tooo short battery life. I don't want to carry a battery package with me. Oher models chose epaper technology to solve this problem and how can Creative ignore this issue? |

Nov 07 (2009) 08:49AM | Owning a kindle, I can say that unless this thing has e-ink technology (i.e not a normal electronic screen) this thing probably won't be a great e-book device. I've tried reading on a laptop, and it really does wear your eyes out. I wasn't sure about the whole Kindle thing, but got one for a test, and have found that a.) it's extremely convenient and enjoyable and b.) the e-ink is an eye saver. If Creative is launching this with a normal screen (as it appears since it is color and supports video), then I can't see it being a very effective e-reader, as it's going to strain your eyeballs. Hopefully they do a good job with this, I would love for Creative to start putting out products that I want to buy again, but this one i'm curious about, since they seem to be jumping on the e-reader bandwagon (good idea) but don't seem to be going the e-ink route (which is a bad idea due to eye strain issues). We'll see, my fingers are crossed for them!! |
