Well this is a bit disappointing. It's like taking a step backwards. They did something similar with the Mozaic I believe, by releasing the Moziac LX, which I believe removed the built-in speakers.

It looks like a basic version. For every player there are more than 1 versions.. I wonder why they would step back to the ZEN when the X-Fi is there. Its probably to cut costs so that they can just make a really good player.
Also, I wonder why AAC and other Software features have been cut. this is no where in the good direction.

I suspect if it's a hardware limitation, then this design was probably a prototype of the original ZEN that they want to have some sales in.

I really dont understand why its worse than the ZVM.

However its a nice player to have .. Just a wrong direction for Creative.

I'm assuming the removal of AAC, Divx, Xvid, and WMV could be because Creative doesn't want to pay licensing fees for them for this release.

going by various posts online (not necessarily reliable, but seem reasonable) AAC is $1.00 per unit to license and WMV is $0.10. Really doesn't seem worth it.

That's just my assumption. It could be a change in hardware that doesn't support the files as Varuna stated, but I'd be surprised by that too. Who knows why Creative does it what it does really, lol

well it's comforting to know that the company isn't wasting money on the ZEN R&D, perhaps they are spending it all on some spiffy wireless touchscreen widescreen player. unlikely, though.

is there a hint of irony that the apparently still crippled sd card process is demoed by the song "a little pain"?

@PowerTorsk: they could have intergrated the Lock function under one of the Menu or sonething ... Like "Settings" > "Lock Player" ... not very logical for it to not have a Lock button

I like the on button and the many different types of formats. are you sure this isn't a chinese knock off . at least there's news of a new player on here. having had a 30 gb zvm, i just can't see myself getting a mp3 player with smaller storage but these flash drive mp3 players are just so damn expensive when you head higher in storage.

sd integration is good when done right and this seems to be in the right direction but the overall package just doesn't suit me for that price. rather get a mosaic or stone + when there's so much fiddling around with video codecs.

"ZVM" > "ZEN" > "ZEN MX" > "ZEN really crap edition?" WHY?

It looks like Creative does not have its engineers to develop new things, at least during the global economic crisis. As far as I see, the difference of the Zen MX is only an absence of a button and of course its name. Not only Creative but also all firms have been advicing us not to buy new DAPs for a year. Nothing to buy here, though its box may be good.

what does mx stand for anyway... also would this have been better off being called something else instead of the zen? probably not since its pretty much the same as the zen just with less stuff.

More disappointment. There are MANY professional reviews of the Zen X-Fi that are critical of the SD card implementation. I've seen over 100 (easy) customer complaints in various forums that are anywhere from critical, to a refusal to buy the Zen X-Fi because of Creative's refusal to fix their products. Simply put, Creative refuses to listen to their customers, or anyone else for that matter. This is a company that is completely lost. They haven't a clue. If they had any brains at all, they would fix the Zen X-Fi before they release ANY more product. I am VERY dissapointed with my Zen X-Fi (32GB), and if they refuse to fix it's various problems, and also rework the SD expansion card function, then this is ABSOLUTELY the last Creative product I will buy. EVER!!!

Suddenly if you don't give more for less money.. you price yourself out of the market due to competitive alternatives. That's hard for companies who aren't in some sort of finanacial trouble.
