Creative MovieWorks HD released, is it powered by Zii? [Updated]

At CES 2008, Creative unveiled a new HD docking station for iPods called the Xdock HD. It was capable of outputting video in 1080i, as well as sending X-Fi quality sound to other wireless receivers around your house. We never heard anything official about it since then. Now today I get an email from Cambridge Soundworks (a Creative subsidiary) telling me about the MovieWorks HD. Nothing about the design, or features seems to have changed from the Xdock HD, but the timing is a bit fishy isn't it?

Last month, during all the hoopla about the Zii, we reported on some screens that supposedly came from a Zii device. We then discovered that the interface looked identical to that found on the Xdock HD. So now the Zii chip has been revealed to the world, and all of a sudden we see this device become official, after a year of being in hibernation? That's some coincidence!

TheMovieWorks HD will work with just about every iPod, and has a retail price of $249. We've contacted Cambridge Soundworks to confirm whether this device has a Zii chip inside or not.

Update: I got a reply back soon after contacting Cambrdige soundworks, informing me that it does not have a Zii chip inside. Tech in Hiding also got a similar response. I still think the timing is a bit odd, but it really is one big coicidence.

"Hello Michael,

No, the MovieWorks HD is not powered by the Zii chip."

No offence or anything - but what the hell does it do that a $5 ipod video cable wont? Apart from X-fi, which is pointless on movies, and upmixing, which alot of TVs and stereos do anyway. I mean, you could just about build a PC for that much - and being a dock, its not exactly portable or anything.

I dont mean to be skeptical or pessimistic - just explain to me why the average person would want one - and if the average person doesn't want one, then explain why a company that can barely make a profit is making such a device. I cant help but feel Creative is heading the wrong way.

What they should do, and what i need at the moment actually... is a Zii powered box with a 500gb hdd that will play up to 1080p MKV vidoes.... I would buy it straight away!

Yo Creative
Where are those Zii-Powered Zens that all(or most) of us want?

@ moorey : hehe no I didnt mean to imply that, but just that on second thoughts, its kind of pointless and they really do need to concentrate their tech and ideas in one device and all that.
This is great.. but I wouldn't buy it cause of its got not much practicality.

Yeah - its not a terrible product, just one of limited use, with a large price.

Yeah, i totally agree... Many people love buying overpriced items for no justifiable reason - look at Mac sales increase (Just most Mac users - not all - some have good reasons)

okay lets not get into blaming anyone. This is what I think :
There are lots of iPod Docks out there. and frankly not many do half of the things the Xdock HD does. Infact the Xdock HD more lies in the group of TV Media Players.
Quite frankly, I've never used a dock in my life. I've never been craving for the need for having a cradle for my devices and so on for so and so. Even if the ZVM had its propitary connections, I still used the jack MOST of the time to hook up audio and the connector for Video out. But then Why would I use my iPod as watching movies on a TV ? In a way the Xdock HD solves it, but I would rather hook up my 500GB External Hdd to it and have a bigger library/options.
But the truth is that for many people (sometimes me) is that we have all our music on mp3 players and so on. hence for the people on the go, this is great. but again if I were to think where to spend my money wisely, I wouldn't go for anything like this. Its a matter of convenience.
This is what I think Creative should do. Make it more practical ! Add support for USB devices and HD playback. The most innovative and practical product I've seen under this category is the Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player which is quite amazing. Hence it matches the iPod market plus it would have a bigger effect of Creative's awesome technology too.
Zii can very much achieve this
/sorry for long post.
