False Alarm: Creative's new X-Fi product is a Notebook soundcard

Well that's what I get for getting my hopes up about Creative. It appears the press event Creative has scheduled for the 17th will be to introduce this new X-Fi soundcard for notebooks. Based on the words "I am heard everywhere" I was really expecting a new DAP, but I suppose it fits just the same with a laptop

This is actually the second X-Fi notebook card that Creative has released. So how does this one differ? It allows you to listen to your music anywhere in your house using wireless receivers (sold separately). This is exactly like the Xmod wireless, just in a notebook card form-factor.It looks nice and all that, but I'm still disappointed that it's not a new player. The Sound Blaster X-Fi Notebook card starts shipping next week and retails for $89.99. Wireless receivers currently sell for $99.99 each.

...it looks really cool...
...although to stem the tide of negativity that is sure to ensue...
...ill get a start on pressuring the robot...
...to pressure sim into making a new player...

Why would they hold a press event just for this thing?

is there still a chance they show something else in the event?

I don't know. That was a bit of a letdown though. I secretly had my hopes up.

I cant help but think that it sticks out WAY too much. And it doesnt do surround or digital by the looks of it.

I am left wondering if there may still be other announcements. Creative isn't in the position to do a press release on a single product...

I don't know why some of you guys would be disappointed on thinking anything new PMP wise would be released. The Zen was only released a little while ago and then the Mosaic. Both underwhelming products to be sure. If Creative was smart (and god knows they aren't) They would have waited a little while longer to release the Zen X Fi and Mosaic and instead present them in the press conference with this sound card.

And BTW Its a sound card for a notebook. Exactly how many do they expect to sell? More money wasted in R&D for this thing that probably won't turn a profit for a company in an extremely niche market. What genius over there said "Man that market for Notebook soundcards is lucrative! We need to get in that, and I mean yesterday!!"

So they could have had at least had some positive publicity by releasing their players and the sound card at the same time, but instead... just this.

A whole press event for this is a real disappointment. It's either that my expectations are too high or that Creative just doesn't know what they are doing. I'm not saying that this won't sell well, but what they need more than a laptop soundcard is a NEW PMP.
I'll admit that I used to be a Creative fanboy for quite some time(5 years to be exact) but this kinda stuff just doesn't cut it IMO
The X-Fi is a good player in my eyes...but it can't replace something like the ZVW...and a replacement for that player is something that Creative needs.
And yes I know that it seems like I am totally against Creative now but I'm not...I just think that they need to really get...well...creative! with their pmps

Creative is targeting long term survival. Wireless is only the beginning and they are quite advanced (quite a few products and also a player) in this area. They definitely need audio to turn around because they are no doubt the best in this area. In the short term stakeholders are quite disappointed, including shareholders and fans. They cannot rush to come out with a player that is supposed to compete with Ipod touch or even better. So far, only Apple and Microsoft have the OS technology to deliver a great touchscreen device. Also, player is only part of the future, not all resources should be directed at it.

I don't think there was a press event. I think it was just a "press outreach" as micheal said. Anyways, although it wasn't a new player, i don think it's a pretty cool sound card and i'm also a laptop user. But i'm not sure if i will pay that kind of money to buy it and the receiver.

Try out the touch screen on an LG Voyager. Mine seems to work pretty good. It takes a little time to get used to it, but it works as advertised. I doubt it's an Ipod killer. Creatives version of a touch screen PMP could be an interesting gadget.

i dont think any points we make are going to get Creative to make any kind of touch screen player.

the really simple fact is: I dont see any major companies in the Asian markets making touch screen anythings. Sure, apple released one over there, but thats an international power house with the ability to release anything.

The cellphones in asia are more used for email, pic, and txt sending. theres really no need for a touch screen to do any of that. just a good responding keypad and high res cams. Meaning, Creative will take no note from them at all. The only thing they see is Wireless streaming, High sound quality, and their profit losses.

As i think about it now. I dont think Creative is even listening to anyone outside Asia at all......

Creative is slowly killing itself (in the US market, at least)

luckily for them, they aren't based in the U.S,.. You just need to look at the business news over the last few days :p

on another note, if i can use these with my own speakers plugged into my laptop without the need for these wireless speakers for the time being, Im all for better sound. Though I think the soundblaster go would be a better option for me.

Someone mentioned in the other post the exact same product. Realistically, i didn't think it would be about a dap/pmp especially so close to an apple/zune announcement. they would end up shooting themselves in the feet as the news would only be a blip in the radar.

In a marketing perspective, i just don't think it'd make much sense since they had just released their latest zen player... unless it was a revolution.

A ZVW replacement may just be around the corner when 64gb becomes prevalent as it seems like creative have abandoned HDD based players.
