Creative announces the ZEN Mozaic

Creative is back to their old selves again, announcing their 3rd new player in the past two weeks. This time it's the Zen V replacement I hinted about a while back, and it comes in the form of a quite unusual looking player called the Zen Mozaic.

[ image disabled ]

As you can see, the design of the player stays true to its name, having an assortment of grey and black titles across the front. On paper, the player is fairly similar to the ZEN V series, but increases the screen size to 1.8" and adds a built-in speaker. One notable improvement is in battery life. The Mozaic will provide 32 hours of audio playback. Another difference is the interface, which is closer to the ZEN series than the Zen V.

Features
:

  • Capacity: 2, 4, and 8GB
  • Display: 1.8" TFT display (64K colors)
  • Audio: MP3, WMA, WAV, and Audible
  • Transcoded video support
  • FM Tuner
  • Voice Recorder
  • Built-in speakers
  • Battery life: 32 hours for audio
  • Colors: Black, Silver, and Pink
  • Dimensions: 79.5 mm x 40.0 mm x 12.8 mm

Creative already has a nice lineup of accessories to go along with this new player, including a travelsound speaker system, a skin pack, and a carabiner case. It's nice to see Creative being well....creative with their designs, but I'm not sure if eccentric patterns will gain the appeal of the masses. The ZEN Mozaic is currently selling at Singapore (and Japan) at prices ranging from 99 to 169 dollars, or roughly 73 to 124US dollars. No word on a worldwide release, but we'll update you when we find out.

Update:

One of our members managed to get his hands on the Mozaic at Creative's Singapore store and has provided this hands-on video:

it's "Mozaic", not Mosaic. Creative's being creative with its player naming as usual. Lol

They should have just stuck with the V series, although this wouldn't look bad if they made it one solid color.

Actually, this player looks promising to me.

Creative should have continued their original Zen V designs...the glossy black plastic...not with the joystick of course. Iuno I think it's just me...but I don't really like players that resemble phones.

ahaha.. since this is a successor for V Plus, at least the increased the screensize from 1.5" to 1.8". But as you can see the size is slightly longer with that. Hmm.. The more I look at it, the more I think it is like one of those Sony candybar phones. Lol.

It reminds me a lot of the Sony Walkmens, I think they are? But it also remind me of the WAV.

I would probably buy the Mozaic in the somewhat near future.

Those are the two players they reminded me of too Bosco. It also kinda reminded me of the Sansa e200 series as well. The design is growing on me. It looks pretty cool from the side angle.

Oh yeah, it does remind me of the e200 series.
I like the fact that it has a little slot for keyrings like the V series did. Those come in handy, sometimes.

Very bizarre looking. I do like how the screen can adjust from portrait to landscapre mode.

Our dear friend kingone has just bought the player.. Check out his first look at the playerhere.

EDIT: I thought he bought it. Lol. You must be a frequent customer that they didn't stop you for taking photos of it?

When I first saw it.. I thought it was a phone with some kind of funky design.. But the more I think about it, it does look kinda cool. Looks like a cross between a WAV and a ZEN.

What res is the screen?

From pics it looks like 176x220 not 240x320.

Damo

EDIT: Checked - The screen is terrible - Creative website says "1.8" 64K Color TFT Display, 128 x 160 pixels resolution" It should at least be 320x240.

If Sony can do a 1.8" 320x240 screen, why can't creative.

I agree with damo. In the photos i thought the text looked a little blocky - no wonder why. That wouldnt put me off buying it though. Its clearly not designed for photos or videos.

^Yep quite normal, they probably don't want to overlap the zen.
Btw the Black one looks quite ok...

I swear that Creative is TRYING to spread themselves too thin! Every week brings a new, mediocre player. They should discontinue half of the lines and focus on a great player that will actually make a difference in the market. As creative continues to do this, they will continue to lose their market share.

Wow, is Creative going to have built-in speakes on all new players? They forgot to put games on the player

I give up.
Creative simply doesn't want to compete.
Every player they release is, as "noinfo" says mediocre.
How can a company continue to do this?
It's like Sandisk never updating their UI on their players. Are they insane?

It will be released in Europe. Prices in France (ten euros cheaper in Germany):
2GB - 70€
4GB - 90€
8GB - 110€
16GB - 160€ (after the summer)

And a lot of high res photos Link

Is a very ugly player IMHO, but is very well priced and has a very good battery life, a real AUDIO player (if it sounds good enough). Maybe in real life it looks better and perhaps this buttons are comfortable.

This player doesn't look that bad TBH. Just take a look at it on kingone's blog...I wouldn't mind buying it actually. Tho I still miss Creative's old ZVP style...not the joystick of course!

I like how it looks personally, but in terms of specs it's nothing special

Jul 24 (2008) 02:40PM
when i first saw it i thought they made a cellphone. I don't like the design but i guess people that want something fancy would buy that, and the specs aren't that good, exception of battery life. I'm seriously missing my ZVM, when would creative listen.

Honestly, I think it looks quite nice. Also, Creative didn't really expand their product line, to me I think they refreshed/simplified it. Compared to Apple: they have a shuffle-ish player (Krystal), a nano-ish player (mozaic), and a Classic-ish player (Zen Xfi).

Doesn't seem to complex to me. *shrugs*

I think the look is nice. Unique, in a sense. A bigger screen, speakers, and probably battery life (?) are great improvements over the Zen V. Hell, I might get one of these in the future.

but in terms of Creative's overall new line-up, I think they're still missing a top-of-the-line player..

i would like to see how the album art is displayed, since its now portrait rather than landscape. whether it would fill up more of the screen or will it be at the corner as usual.

This is NO Way better than the Zen V Series

Cons over the Zen V :

- Same specs
- Bigger
- Same Resolutions
- Less Audio Formats
-No Volume Controler !
Gosh !

The only reason I see to get this player is :

- Battery Life !
- Speaker ?
- A Bigger and more sweet Navigation

well, in its own way its ok

When i first saw it: ITS UGLy.

Now, its just OKAY..
Not appealing at all

I'm dissapointed !

They could have done much better !!

It seems like they thought of the name before they designed the player.
"Hey since we're calling it mozaic, lets put a bunch of pointless crap on it!"
"That's a great idea!"

so pissed.
