Creative will be releasing a new player called the Zen Krystal. As you may have guessed from looking at it, it is the follow-up to the Zen Stone series. The Krystal sets itself apart from its predecessors with the addition of a pedometer. According to Creative the pedometer "can track the distance ran, the speed you were running at as well as the amount of calories burnt during your exercise workout.". It also has a stopwatch ( just like the Stone Plus).Another puzzling addition is game support. I've been asking for games for years now and Creative's first attempt comes in the form of a dice rolling game, dodgeball, and some racing game on a microscopic 0.7" screen. It's a start I guess. Features
The Zen Krystal has only shown up at Creative's Hong Kong site, but it will be released in other regions eventually. It must be a strategy of Creative to release the same player every few months. First the Zen Stone, then the Stone Plus, then the Stone with built-in speakers and so on. Expect the Zen Krystal Plus in another few months! The Krystal does looks nicer than the Zen Stone Plus. The boxy shape is reminiscent of the Sansa Clip from Sandisk. Hopefully it sounds as good as that player too. Sadly, not much has changed from the original Stone series. I do like the addition of games, and I hope that becomes a trend for Creative. With all the buttons the ZEN X-Fi has you could cover a wide-range of games. Make it happen Creative! LINK) (via ABi)

Jul 17 (2008) 01:20PM | Nice sleek little player ! I'm very tempted to see the side of the player but there is no pic currently of that... Hope to see in action too.. sounds interesting.. Also the Games are all pedometer based.. Which is a small ball inside the player.. one hop = one step (which is how the pedometer works).. more you hop.. more you run.. more you get points for the game i guess ... But.. Why Krystal ?? Jul 17 (2008) 01:28PM | This is pretty nice! This is def something I would buy...this is the type of Zen Stone followup that I have been waiting for. I love Creative's recent players. This player is MUCH MUCH nicer looking than the Zen Stone's with screens. Count me in for one of these too!!! |

Jul 17 (2008) 01:39PM ![]() | I also need to see the player from a few more angles, but the screen does look nicer than that round Stone Plus one. Plus it looks like it has a windowless display which I also like. [ edited Jul 17 (2008) 01:49PM ] |

Jul 17 (2008) 04:21PM | If they're planning on releasing more players it would have made a lot more impact to do some kind of press conference to present all the players at once. as the new Zen line of players. this player does look nice, but if it really is a follow up to the stone creative should have kept all the features of the stone. it's hard to see a player as a new version of another when the name, the looks and the features are different. |

Jul 17 (2008) 06:50PM | Oh.... I like the pedometer function. Wonder how much this would cost. |
| Rhodekill
Jul 17 (2008) 06:56PM | Potentially, it could be pretty good. I just hope they fixed the Stone's GUI. |

Also, Creative if you reading this: This would be probably the BEST time releasing other players.. just look at everyone's positive response on this and the X-Fi ! Jul 17 (2008) 08:26PM | Not a bad little player - looks very decent, hard to see how it could go wrong really. AS SSJ said - we want more photos. Good work Creative for this one. So how long until we see "ZEN Krystal with Speaker" The only player left to replace is the ZVW - i'm waiting for that. |

Jul 17 (2008) 09:15PM | that appears to be everything i ever wanted in a small player. Hope the pedometer is at least 95% accurate with its distance measurement, if this is the case, no doubt i will buy one. Better yet, it could not be a pedometer at all, more of an accelerometer, although this is not likely (there is a reason the nike+ ipod sensor goes in the shoe) |

Jul 17 (2008) 09:23PM | mp3 + pedometer = I'm intrigued I hope they're available at Amazon.com very soon!!!! I want one... I like to walk & listen to music :-> |

Jul 17 (2008) 09:26PM | When they release something with more than 40 GBs of space I'll be really interested. As for this maybe I'll finally get a smaller sized player to use when I do cardio. |

Jul 17 (2008) 10:01PM | I know that the Zen and the Zen X-Fi are supposed to be sucessors to the ZVP...but I really see them as sucessors to the Zen Vision M...and Krystal of couse is a sucessor to the Zen Stone...they should come out with sucessors to the Zen Vision W and the Zen V Plus!!! |
| moorey
Jul 18 (2008) 02:49AM | They are more successors of both. Creative is trying (it seems) to weed out the dozens of players they seem to produce. Another very successful company only produces 3 dedicated DAPs, and that plan works very well for them. Personally, i dont believe that the ZVW was profitable enough - not that it wasnt a great player, just that its not a large enough market. |

Jul 18 (2008) 12:14PM | The official price for the Creative HK price on this player is $698.00 HK Dollars...which is about 89.52 USD according to XE.com...so this player will be around 90 USD I'm guessing? [ edited Jul 18 (2008) 12:17PM ] |

Jul 18 (2008) 01:21PM ![]() | I figured out why they called this one Zen Krystal! The last one was called Zen Stone, and this is an upgrade! I bet the next ones will be like sapphire and ruby and stuff like that. Then the'yll go through all the other Gameboy Pokemon games. ![]() |

Jul 20 (2008) 02:11AM | Damo i guess i was unclear. I did not count the iPhone or the iTouch, as they arent "dedicated" DAPs, and also Apple survived on just 3 player for ages. I guess i probably should count the touch though, since it probably competes with most 'mainstream' type DAPs. I guess you could count MS, and maybe sandisk. |

Jul 20 (2008) 12:08PM | Creative making strange moves... they are hopeless... the zen x-fi and now this |
| kiasukid
Jul 20 (2008) 12:12PM | What's wrong with the Zen X-Fi and this player? I actually rather like the Zen X-Fi when I played with it in the shop and I'm also somewhat interested in the Zen Krystal. |

Jul 22 (2008) 02:28AM | I agree CF: there is no 'fine line' for what is a DAP and what isnt. I'm not going to defend what i said. You can count the iTouch if you want, but there are arguments for and against. As Apple keeps on telling us, it supposedly runs a cut down version of OS X (bullshit), so that would make it more of a pocket PC, yet it does as much as any DAP. I dont really know exactly. I am sure as hell not counting the iPhone as a DAP though, Its primary purpose is for communication, and is sold in phone shops, on a plan... However, labeling something as a DAP is ultimately pointless. Its like arguing what a colour really is. ![]() |
