It's Official! Creative has just announced the ZEN X-Fi on their Singapore website. Of course, I've spoiled it for most of you already, but there's a few new things to find out about. As we predicted here, there are two different versions, one with WiFi built-in and one without. The WiFi versions will come in capacities of 16 and 32GB's, and the WiFi-less version will only be available for the 8GB model. ![]() Features
Surprisingly the ZXFi is already on sale at Creative's Singapore site. The prices for the 8, 16, and 32GB models are 229, 329, and 399 Singapore dollars respectively, which directly converts to prices of $169, $242, and $294US dollars. Those prices seem to be in line with the original ZEN model. Creative announced a few accessories as well including a Travelsound Docking speaker system (shown below), an armband, a leather case, and a silicone skin pack. ![]() ZEN X-Fi with Travelsound Docking speaker system After thinking about the ZEN X-Fi these past few weeks, I feel Creative has not done enough to make a product that differs greatly from their previous models. I mean, this is just the ZEN with X-Fi added. Sure it also has WiFi, but its uses aren't that practical for most people. A lot of the new features could have (and should have) been available in the original. Like others here, I would have liked to see a larger screen, and one with a touchscreen interface. I'm also disappointed by Creative's refusal to add new codecs. In their press release they say the following: "We addressed the issue of the poor quality of digital music by inventing X-Fi technology, which restores the quality of music that is lost during the digital ripping process". There's another way they could have addressed the issue of poor quality music, and it has four letters: FLAC. While I think X-Fi is a nice sound enhancer, there's no way it compares to lossless quality. If Creative truly cared about delivering the best sound possible they would have supported lossless formats in addition to X-Fi. On the positive side, the ZEN X-Fi looks quite nice. I was turned off by the chrome edges initially, but it is an improvement from the typical cheap plastic toy look that Creative has been using lately. I'm also impressed by the player's battery life, but I do wonder what the numbers will be with X-Fi turned on. Compared to the competition, I'd say the ZEN X-Fi holds up pretty well, though I still think should have done more. I'll have plenty more to say about this player later, but for now I'll let the members here give their opinions. Press Release (via our Forums Cnet Asia, and AV Watch) Thanks to all that sent this in! Click the link below to see Creative's official video for the ZEN X-Fi [ Read the rest ... ]

Jul 10 (2008) 11:10PM ![]() | I'm sure it doesn't differ greatly than their previous line-up - the ZEN and I'm sure many of you probably thought it should have been there in the first place. It may not be the ground shaker that we'd be hoping for but it certainly is a great player. I can think of another company that relies more so on coolness and hype that hasn't differed greatly from each generation. Other than their stand out touch, that company hasn't really done much to make me want to buy their players. But hey at least I can count on them drowning me in another catchy song silhouette advert!!!!!@#$ Can't wait to see what happens in the next 6 months when i'm looking to get myself a new player when i go travelling. As i'm hoping this will be only one of many in this range of x-fi related zen products. On another note, would love to see product images of yahoo and msn in use and I know it's a gimmick but built in speakers is cool when use wisely of course! [ edited Jul 10 (2008) 11:17PM ] |

Jul 11 (2008) 12:54AM | I wonder how they came up with such a genius upgrade... I think it went something like this: "OK so lets upgrade the ZEN and make it AWESOME!" "Yeah alright!" "Alright so how about adding our totally awesome X-FI to it and make it super cool???" "That is awesome yeah!" "We could even add a useless WIFI to the mix with MSN and Yahoo to it!" "THAT WILL PWN SO HARD" "Lets leave everything else the same though, the screen is HUMONGOUS already I think we would overwhelm people with anything bigger than 2.5 inches" "OMG I totally agree" ....................................................................... |

Jul 11 (2008) 01:16AM | OOOH! A speaker! Seriously, Creative, you couldn't give us a touch screen? Or lossless support? Sure, X-Fi is great, but how much am I gonna need to drop on earbuds before I notice a difference from the great-sounding original ZEN? Is there really that much of an improvement from my near-lossless 192kbps WMA's? And I need to spend an extra $100 (probably more) to get these improvements. And that version doesn't have WiFi. So...A $100 included speaker is basically it. Sorry for the rant, but C'mon, can't we at least get something worthwhile for switching? [ edited Jul 11 (2008) 01:18AM ] |

Jul 11 (2008) 01:32AM | So... How long do you think it'll be before it shows up in my local walmart so I can be slowly worn down by its gorgeous looks and great sound quality and eventually get it? And how does it dock with these new speakers? It looks connected through the bottom, but the only thing there is the speaker. Do you think it uses some microphone/speaker system? or does it have a mini usb dock? if it uses mini usb, do you think Creative will release a firmware update so I can use my ZEN with it? Jul 11 (2008) 01:37AM | i've been a committed Creative mp3 player user for more than 5 years now, going from the Zen Nomad to the ZVM30gb could be considered a big step - but these new players are a whole load of nothing. they're not dock compatible with my Z500 or 600 sound systems, 32gb storage is not an improvement, and in no way do i need to access msn chat from my mp3 player... Creative have stagnated, if i hadn't already invested in the 2 (expensive) sound systems then i'd probably be an ipod touch user by now... but having said all that, if they up the storage level to 60 gig and once i try the player out i may say to hell with Apple, i'm still a Creative guy!!! come on Creative you can do better than this... |

Jul 11 (2008) 01:41AM | There's a lot of appeal to this device...but for every good feature there is a headscratcher as well...instant messaging? Built in speaker? I would trade both those for full SD integration...then you'd have a player on your hands. |
| avenger7875
Jul 11 (2008) 01:49AM | I genuinely wonder if the X-Fi will boost the sound quality of my songs that much. I don't need WiFi if it's only for IM. A speaker could be useful, but there really don't seem to be any further improvements. What I want is a ZEN with a touch screen (at least 2.75 in), full SD integration, X-Fi (maybe), 64GB capacity, FLAC support, and possibly Stereo Bluetooth. If creative built one of those, I would be the first in line! |

Jul 11 (2008) 04:01AM ![]() | avenger7875, I'm assuming the dock connector is on the right side to connect with the USB port there. It would make sense if they made it compatible with the original ZEN but I don't think that'll happen. |

Jul 11 (2008) 05:04AM | For a mp3 player the screen is just large enough, and with xi-fi,this is just perfect for my needs. Also its great that it has NO touchscreen, for touchscreens cannot be as pracical as buttons - this one has 9 directionbuttons, i can imagine that i can use the player with a thumb without looking at it - which is important - and impossible with these over-hyped touchscreens. |

Jul 11 (2008) 09:21AM | There's only so much you can do with any player without looking at the buttons, it's possible for a player to have a touchscreen and enough external buttons to accomplish those tasks, like the Cowon D2. The advantage of a touchscreen is flexibility, you can cover a wide variety of possible tasks with on-screen controls that would be complicated, or not possible, without a touchscreen. With a player like this, however, with limited functionality, and a relatively small screen, a touchscreen wouldn't offer much, it's pretty small for an touchscreen keyboard for chatting. If Creative had released the player some people thought they might, a real iPod Touch competitor, a touchscreen would be the way to go in my opinion, but with external button like the D2 for basic blind functions. Given what is in my opinion Creative's ineptitude over the past few years, I wasn't expect a Touch competitor however, this kind of slight upgrade, with a few gimmicky, but mostly useless features, pretty much met my expectations. Jul 11 (2008) 02:08PM | You know something? I actually would've preferred to wait another couple of months from Creative to get a really good player out. This feels underwhelming to me. I can tell that it was rushed... messenger function w/o a QWERTY slideout? And seriously, a 2.5" at this point in the game? |

Jul 11 (2008) 11:55PM | I don't need WiFi and never will. I am not sure about XFi but it is welcome. I do need bigger screen, more codecs, no video re-encoding, replaceable battery, correct SD integration. The docking station must have a remote to allow the control of sound volume & songs navigation. It must also double as alarm clock. If it is just an external speaker, I can use my current Logitech speakers which has a line in jack. Based on the features of the 2nd version of the ZEN player, where Creative implemented what user don't requested. I think I can exptrapolate the featureset of the ZEN v3: integrated flashlight, razor, thermometer and the ability to connect to an atomic clock via satellite to display the lunar calendar. Next to that, Creative management will wonder why they are losing market share to other brands. [ edited Jul 12 (2008) 12:00AM ] |

(...)" @Cacophony: you nailed it, mate. they take away useful features like the playback of DivX and MPEG-1 files of any resolutions and add WiFi and IM.... furthermore, screen size remains the same and capacity too. i have an old Nomad NX 20Gb (way superior and cheaper than the iPod of its time) and a ZV:M 30Gb (also way superior and cheaper than the iPod of is time) and cannot help but think how underachieving Creative has become. they went from being DAP pioneers to Apple's b!tch in 5 years.... talk about bad management. @Big Brother: censorship doesnt help the cause. when i bought my 1st Creative player epiZENter didnt even dream to exist. i have the right to criticize a company that i have supported longer than many ppl here. censorship will only result in more half-baked releases and stronger consolidation of the Apple products. we want bigger screen, more codecs (no size restriction) and higher capacity....and we have been saying this for years! |

Jul 13 (2008) 10:18AM | I went to Creative's store at Plaza Singapura to look at the Zen X-Fi today and it really does look very good. Sounds good too. I like the size of the player and it looks really good and yet weighs practically nothing. Personally, I don't care about the video playback codecs that much simply because I hardly use my Creative Zen to play video. I have my ZVW for that. Still, I must say the screen is gorgeous. The buttons are also easy to press and I actually like how it looks on the player. It matches my current Sony Ericcson phone too. =D Unfortunately, I couldn't test out the IM feature on the player as I wasn't able to log-on to the servers. But it seems like it's like SMSing on a cell phone which is fine for me as I'm quite good at SMSing, having done it for years and years and I actually prefer it to the phones that come with the keyboard type of messaging system. Unlike some people here, I do like speakers on my mp3 players and I do like the mic feature as I use it on a weekly basis to record my Japanese classes. I also still listen to radio. So I'm happy that the speakers were included and that my mic and radio features are still included on the player. And I'm really happy it isn't touchscreen. I really don't like touchscreens that much. Unless they are on an NDS and I can actually see the point of the touchscreen, I much rather my tactile buttons so that I can operate the player blind if I wanted to. I'm really tempted to buy one even though I'm really quite happy with my Zen right now. If only Creative had a trade-in programme, because I think if they did, I would probably get this player. |
