Exclusive: The ZEN X-Fi revealed!

Since we opened in 2006, we've been the first place to leak just about every player that Creative has released. We first told you about the ZEN X-Fi a few months back, and now I might have an actual photo of it. So without further delay, I present to you the Creative ZEN X-Fi:

Is it real? Of course I can't confirm that right now, but it was sent to me by the same source who first told me about this player (and the Zen Share). The look of the player is fairly similar to how it was described as earlier. It was said to be similar to the original ZEN in design and with a "silver backing", which we can see is really chrome. The chrome edges does give the player an iPhone-esque look, which I'm sure was intentional.

The ZEN X-Fi has the same control layout as the original, but adds 4 buttons along the edges of the D-pad. The SD-card slot is also located on the bottom this time (actually it's not! read below). I don't have any other specifications for this player, but I hope to get that information soon. As usual, everything posted here is a rumor, and will remain so until Creative confirms it. I want to know what everyone thinks about this device. I personally think it looks classy, but for some reason it just doesn't look "real" to me. We'll make sure to update you when we find out more.

Update: Creative confirms the Zen X-Fi, Plus features revealed

Well that was quick. A few hours after I revealed the image above, one of our members searched Creative's site and found official confirmation of the ZEN X-Fi. It comes in the form of a "ZEN X-Fi Starter pack" which is chock full of information about Creative's new player. So here we go.

From the user guide, we know the following:

The picture above is the real deal:

(Click image to see what those numbers correspond to)

That slot at the bottom that I thought was a SD-card slot is actually a built-in speaker! The SD-card slot is still at the top. The power switch as you can see is located on the back of the player Like the original ZEN, the X-Fi will have an FM tuner and Voice recording.

WiFi is built-in - WiFi will be used for

a.) Instant messaging. You can set up an account with Creative that will allow you to chat with contacts from Yahoo! Messenger and Microsoft Live! (aka MSN Messenger). The 9 buttons in the picture above will be used for typing, similar to the way you'd use a cell phone for texting.

b,) Wireless Streaming. You have the ability to connect to Creative's "Public Media Server" or to your home server to play or download files directly on the player.

There are two X-Fi settings:

Turning X-Fi on and off appears to be menu based. There are two options: X-Fi Crystalizer, and X-Fi Expand. Here's the official explanation for both: X-Fi Crystalizer intelligently restores details that were lost during compression of audio files. It makes audio richer and clearer, delivering sound that is closer to the original quality.

On the other hand, X-Fi Expand gives audio a realistic and natural feel. It moves the sound away from your ears and repositions it in front of you - as if listening to a live performance on stage. X-Fi Expand works best with your earphones or headphones.

Creative Centrale
- A better software solution

Creative has created a new all-in-one program called "Centrale". It looks and performs much better than its predecessors from my little time with it. It supports your music, videos, and photos and even appears to have options for DVD ripping.

Do all players have Wi-Fi?

One interesting tidbit was found when checking out the Wi-Fi section of the user guide. At the top it states: "This section applies to ZEN X-Fi players with wireless LAN features.". That seems to imply that there are some models that will not have WiFi built-in. Considering Creative is known for making multiple versions of the same player (e.g. Zen V and V Plus), this wouldn't be a surprise. In fact, that's likely the reason the player is named the ZEN X-Fi and not the Share, nor the WiFi.

I'm so happy to see all this information confirmed so quickly. That's a good sign that this player is ready to be shipped. I have a good feeling Creative will officially announce the player within the next month or so.

The ZEN X-Fi appears to be quite feature-packed, but I'm not sure it's the features that people actually want. Chatting is nice, but this player isn't the most practical for it. Cell phones are perfectly fine for that. I am glad to finally have X-Fi on the go. It's been years since we were promised an X-Fi player, and now that time has come. Hopefully it doesn't kill our battery life.

There's still plenty more to learn about this player, and we'll have that info for you as soon as we get it.

I don't like the D-pad at all. I don't like the shape of the buttons or the fact that there are 4 extra ones. Makes it look weird. Would've been better if the whole front was a screen

ssjmichael
Jun 28 (2008) 03:10PM
Yeah I'm not sure about the placement of those extra buttons. It's sure to lead to some miscues in navigating, (especially blindly).

If they went the fullscreen route, then we'd likely be talking about a touchscreen player, which would definitely be pricey (both to make, and for the consumer). Sure I'd like to see it, but I don't have faith that Creative can make one that would be profitable.

From the looks of things, nothing very exciting, to be honest. Looks like just a second-gen ZEN, with the same screen. Curious about the nine separate directional buttons are for. Are they touch directional? For an on-board browser through wi-fi?

Give me wireless capability, a browser, 60gig flash capacity, an on-board connection to Rhapsody/Napster/Amazon, a games store and a wider array of video codecs...then I've got a good reason to graduate, even if it is as sleek looking as a TI calculator.

The chrome edges are actually the only thing I really like about it. Gives it a kind of retro look which is cool but those extra buttons are driving me crazy

Looks like a phone, add a few buttons and you have an iphone competitor.

Yeah, I agree with Cards, though I'm highly suspect that this is a fake. Look how the "Zen X-Fi" text doesn't fit on that angle, and how huge the earphones are compared with the screen.

Considering it's roughly the same screen dimensions of the ZEN, I don't think the headphones are that out of proportion, if at all. The Zen X-Fi logo was the thing that made me feel it wasn't real though. I'm also not sure if the words at the bottom were from Creative or added by the source. Writing "Zen X-Fi series" makes it seem like there are multiple players.

As stated this was received from the same source who told me about the ZEN share which was confirmed by Creative as a project of theirs. They are getting it from another source themselves, so who knows if there was misinformation passed along the way. I do have a couple separate sources who may confirm/deny this one.

Its.. ugly lol.
It's all i can say, you'd think Creative would have designed a better player now seeing all the nicer looking ones from other companies.

CardsFan
Jun 28 (2008) 04:46PM
I was trying to be nice before but since KC already said it I guess I can say that I don't think it's that attractive either. The chrome edges are a nice touch but the button and screen layout isn't great IMO

zen xfi
like the ID
but the player himself
looks ok, but the only thing I don't like, and don't understand is the 9 buttons in the front
they are ugly and I don't see a reason for them
anyway
I'm looking forward to a new zen, I've been stuck with the zen vision M, I like that one, but I'm looking for a phone, and accually waiting for creative to make one
so
go creative !

If this picture is real, that has to be a MicroSD slot, it's too small to be a full SD slot.

Jun 28 (2008) 06:10PM
You know, yesterday I was watching some Cnet reviews on Cell Phones. And the phones had features such as: buttons looking a lot like the 9 in the middle of the ZEN X-Fi. And those buttons on the cell phones would change accordingly the menu inside. Such as if you're in music, the buttons would change to forward, back, play/pause. Maybe thats what those are?

Bosconias
Jun 28 (2008) 06:14PM
Why does it say epiZENter.net on it?

Raider Red
Jun 28 (2008) 06:19PM
galace, i like that idea. and they are translucent, but this is Creative, so 50/50 chance on an amazing idea such as that.
Bosco, so that when people hotlink to the image on sites like Engadget instead of coming here, they'll see the name. It's just a photoshop, I assume.

elysia05
Jun 28 (2008) 06:24PM
it looks odd. wow, never expected it to look like this. if this is the real player then hopefully the sound and apps. will blow me over.

ssjmichael
Jun 28 (2008) 06:24PM
Bosco, I put epiZENter on the screen because there are many websites out there who take images without giving credit to the original source.

As for the looks, I can't say it's all that great, but it does look more sophisticated than most other plasticky looking players from Creative. I'm the type that prefers function over form though so it doesn't bother me either way

sigh not what i was looking for and i really dont mind the new dpad but what bothers me is the size of screen... way to small and its not widescreen either.... if they realease this i will buy ti ofcourse for the x-fi but i will have to keep my ZVW to watch movies.... im hoping they release x-fi with a bigger and wider screen.

Jun 29 (2008) 02:13AM
Not bad, although I'll wait to see the actual specs. I was hoping for widescreen and a web browser, but the fact that it has Wi-Fi should make it a juicy target for Rockbox., or a possible firmware update (unlikely, but not impossible)

Let's just hope it has the ZVM's codec support (plus H.264), WMA Lossless and/or FLAC support, and an SD slot that actually integrates. RDS would also be a nice touch, but it isn't nececarry.

As long as they keep it from lookin like another dap i'm good with it.
with a pad like that i'm hopin that it'll have a t9 type of typing prediction.
if internet browsing was thrown on there, i'm pretty sure that'd be more of a gimmick.
the use of the wi-fi i hope for is streamin videos in h.264 at the Very Least! and including a dock for easy hook ups to systems an etc.

Other than all that, it's a nice addition

i havent read all of these comments, but it seems to me that everyone think this new player it just another fugly creative letdown.

finally! A new player and its not a player that relies heavily on touch screen! wahey, I love buttons

I assume its going to be about the same size in regards to storage as the zen. I love the fact that this player will have x-fi included!

i like the wifi aspects of it. I agree with someone else that its very Bang and Olufsen in design...

for chatting, im not a big fan of button arrangements like that but I can live with it. something like the xperia sony phone would be cool or even something like the xbox360 controller where you can have an add-on for chatting.

the new program looks promising...

opera browser for web surfing perhaps?

The only thing holding me back is the lack of a big screen

i were really looking for a 3" screen

although, the sign DOES say 'x-fi player s'

the S being the big main thing there

cause that implies there more than one x-fi player coming

that just me though, i prefer a bigger screen, cause i like vids

but the player itself i must say has grown on me. Not that i didn't like it before, hehe, but it's grown

ooh, i've just notivced update 2 (more coming in 2 days)

A Touch screen seems better than the awkward looking buttons! those just look real flimsy and could come off anytime. A buitl in web browser (Flash 9 enabled) would be nice if it'd have a touch screen, then it'd be better than my PSP. But the chat feature is nice, since I have an MSN account for chatting with friends

Dominic
Jun 30 (2008) 07:33AM
A touchscreen is only good if it is implemented well, no point putting a touchscreen on if it's not capable. Don't judge the buttons, you haven't used them so you don't know if they are awkward or flimsy.

If this new player is priced right and if it has good reviews and a decent screen size(which is probably only about 2.5" which I can tolerate...I might really consider this new player to replace my aging ZVP!
