Exclusive: Creative's Wi-Fi player name revealed!

[ image disabled ]I haven't heard so much as a peep from Creative about their upcoming lineup, but thankfully I have some insiders who are happy to pass along some information. They've just provided me with some good news, and some bad news. So what do you want to read first? The good news is, I was just told the name of Creative's upcoming WiFi player: It will be called the "Zen Share". I don't have any more details than that, but from the name alone you can tell that Creative is creating some form of WiFi sharing, that's likely similar to what Microsoft is doing with the Zune. I just hope it isn't as limited as Zune to Zune sharing.

Now for the bad news: the Zen Share won't be released in March as was previously planned. It's been delayed till May/June. We still may see it announced at CeBIT 2008, which will take place from March 4th -9th, but I said the same thing in January for CES '08. As usual, this information is merely a rumor until it's confirmed, so keep that in mind when discussing it!

If you're visiting us for the first time, we've just shown once again why we're the best Creative fansite around. If you're a fan of Creative make sure to sign up!

Michael, do you think it would have web browsing? Or does the fact that it is titled "...share" make you think that it would have purely the ability to "share" songs with other people?

I know I know, just speculation and it doesn't mean a thing, but I can't help but wonder...

Well at least they are doing something
Anything on capacity, flash/hdd, features, screen size?
Not really much of a leak, since we all knew a wi-fi player was coming

Hopefully it has a web browser and the ZVM's codec support/resolution. RDS is also something I'd like to see, but it isn't really huge.

And if it does have a touchscreen, I hope they have an SDK. Or better yet, make it Linux based.

"Don't get your hopes up. More then likely a zune'ish like player. What would be cool is a service like the Sandisk Sansa Connect."

You mean a player that started off at $250 and a year later is on sale for under $100 everywhere? I suspect the demand was pretty low. Don;t get me wrong, I thought it was a cool player and got one for my nephew before he went into the army. I thought the wireless downloads and subscription service would be good since I didn't think he'd have access to a PC to manage his music. Turns out he bought a laptop and has regular internet access on base, so he just uses it as a basic MP3 player.

Will this be a M or W form factor?
Will there be lower cost hard drive options?
What kind of features will there be?

Just as the Archos wifi hard drive products are getting affordable, Creative will churn out a bone... they better do this before the 80gb Archos Wifi gets below $150 otherwise, I may just pull the trigger on that..

My ZVM still working 14 months out..
I'm wondering if I should splurge on buying a remote control... Hmmm...

Share?? What a useless feature! How many people actually share their music especially via wi-fi? Now, if it is for web browsing that would be a different matter. If so, please make the browser easy and fast otherwise don't bother.
Please don't be a flash player...please!

Wireless sharing seems especially useless given Creative's market share.

I wasn't really excited to begin with and now I'm neither more or less excited, more like indifferent. I'm with HHS, why could Creative think sharing would work when it hasn't worked for a behemoth like Microsoft?

Dopamino
Feb 20 (2008) 03:03PM
Besides, almost no one will buy it anyway, so sharing will be even more useless.

Illmatic016
Feb 20 (2008) 04:02PM
Hopefully this thing will have a nice screen and be of a smaller size (not that the ZVM is large, but it's pretty thick compared to everything else). I don't want a huge player like the ZVW, that thing is a monster.

Depending on what it looks like, and if it's atleast 60+ GB...I might be interested.

Otherwise I'm either upgrading my hdd for my zvm or getting a Zune 80.

Maybe they call it the Share because it has an internal speaker so you can share your music, and they leave the Wifi completely functional as on the iTouch (I pray they do so, I really liked the iTouch but it's so expensive and I already got a reputation of hating iPods, so buying that would be strange to my friends )

Internal speaker(s) is what Creative seems to like these days... But my theory probably won't become reality.

HipHopScribe
Feb 20 (2008) 05:10PM
I've pretty much given up on Creative, given how mediocre their current line-up is, with not a single exceptional player, but I suspect that people still holding out hope will be disappointed with what they come out with, they just seem to be lost as a company. Just the name of this thing is uninspiring, I see it as almost inevitably leading to something that doesn't accomplish what its suggests in terms of capability, or has features that just aren't practically of any use to the majority of consumers, which I guess means it would fit right in the the Zen and the Zen Stone w/speaker.

@ Cardsfan: Because the WiFi sharing on the Zune is crippled by DRM and Microsoft is in Universal's pocket? They receive royalties from every Zune sold, despite not doing anything with it.

Although for all we know, it's another Microsoft-Novell deal.

HipHopScribe
Feb 20 (2008) 06:06PM
The Wifi sharing on the Zune isn't a big thing because there aren't enough Zunes out there, people don't know or care about a deal with Universal, and the 3 play thing is an issue to people, but it's not why they aren't buying the Zune or using the feature for the most part. This is obvious, but Wifi sharing is only a useful feature if there are people to share with, basically at this point the only player in the US it would be a useful feature on would be an iPod, no other company has a user base large enough. Now, Microsoft has the potential just because of how huge they are, but it's still only a potentially useful feature, the Zune hasn't permeated the market nearly enough. Creative basically has no chance of any sharing feature being useful in the US, the only real point to Wifi is web-browsing and the like (like the Touch), there's internet radio, podcasts and download services, but those have been tried on other players, there just isn't a service outside of iTunes with wide enough use for that to be worthwhile, and wifi syncing is nice, but not really a big benefit.

Just want to reinforce the fact that this is a rumor, and for all we know the name Zen Share is not official. I think Creative should be aware of the fact that a sharing system only works if enough people have the player. They can see how unsuccessful Microsoft has been with their sharing system so I imagine if it does do sharing, it won't just rely on Zen to Zen sharing. We'll see.

I don't really see how Microsoft having a deal with Universal would hamper the sharing. Like HHS mentioned, there just aren't enough of them to make it viable.

To be honest i was extremely excited when I heard the news but i'm starting to realize that creative wont do this well in all likelyhood. I have the sinking feeling that there going to try to do something like zune to zune sharing and they will fall on there faces...again.

Plaese creative we all love you but give us something to love

moorey
Feb 21 (2008) 02:24AM
sh4dow, sorry but you are wrong. the RIAA was actually charging him with file sharing, and some press people screwed it up.

and yeah, i only have ever seen one person with a ZVM, and only two people with other Creative players in over two years. so the share feature will be totally useless to me, or at least, i will be able to use it maybe once every 8 months, assuming those people all upgrade.

i think we all know what we really want. a TRUE ZVM successor and a true ipod classic competitor. unless the wifi is done well it shouldnt be done at all

CardsFan
Feb 21 (2008) 02:58AM
Agree with most here, if the wifi is for some kind of sharing and can't be used for anything else, it won't be worth it. If you can use it for internet then I'm interested. What I want is an Ipod Touch like device, doesn't necessarily have to be touchscreen but I would prefer it that way. Nice screen, big enough to watch a movie without thinking of the small screen. The Touch is everything I need except for memory space. If Creative gives me an option with more space I will have to give it a look but it will have to be special to make me give up my Touch

llc00ljd
Feb 21 (2008) 04:01AM
Well, At least we have some news. I have my ZVM still 30 GB. It might be a little while till i replace but I'm waiting to see what Creative has. From this player i want more capacity (Ideally 80 like the Zune offers), a bigger screen, bigger album art. I guess the wireless syncing thing would be cool. I also don't want an interface with a new look because i've been looking at this one for what more then 2 years? If Creative fails to meet my expectation i'll be getting a Zune 80 GB even though it can't play .avi files and can't be used for storage.

Not to be a downer or anything, but I have a feeling that this player won't be the revolutionary player that Creative needs to get back on its feet and really compete with Apple and Microsoft these days. I noticed many of you guys wishing for internet capability on this upcoming player, but come on guys, this is a feature that's been in the iPod touch since the fall of LAST year and Creative will be a year late even if they actually manage to bring this functionality into the Share. Also, even if the share has a touchscreen, it probably won't be a multitouch screen (which is a huge advantage once you've tried it in web browsing)...Apple may have ripped off of Creative's ideas in the past, but now it seems like Creative can't come up with anything creative (pun intended) in their new players to compete with the more popular manufacturers.

Feb 27 (2008) 01:52PM
Actually the timing of the ZEN Share is perfect if the its networking capabilities are better than the Zune. If they beat the Zune's sharing and maybe the screen size it will blow the Zune out of the water. Lets just hope they don't screw it up.

Meanwhile though I'll be enjoying my ZEN
