CES 2008: Creative announces Zen Stone/Plus with built-in Speakers

[ image disabled ]Well it looks like one of my realistic predictions was right on the money. Yesterday I predicted a "Shuffle-type player...with built-in speakers", and that's exactly what was just announced by Creative. The Zen Stone and Zen Stone Plus will now be equipped with built-in speakers.

The new models are priced relatively well, with the 2GB Zen Stone retailing for $49.99, and the Zen Stone Plus for $59.99. They'll sport new metallic colors in shades of Black, Pink, Blue, and Champagne. They will also come packaged with a silicone case with a clip. Battery life has also been doubled, from 10 hours (9.5 hours for Stone Plus) to 20 hours for both models. That's quite impressive for such a small player. The downside? It's size. The thickness of the Stone is increasing from 12.8mm's to a whopping 16mm!

Are you disappointed by this announcement? Woeful even? I'm feeling a little let down myself, but I'm still optimistic that Creative has another new player up their sleeves. I'll make sure to keep everyone updated with any new developments.

Well that's what I heard, but who knows really. I'm losing more hope as time goes on that they're going to announce more stuff. That would really suck

So is this everything do we think, or might there be something more? No ideas?

I know Its bugging..

I'm Happy with the Zen Stone and the Plus with speakers release.. I don't see any downside to it at all...Good Job

Like I was saying somewhere else.. Giving false hopes is something else than progress...

I do really like this, I was just thinking there might be something more sort of exciting. Still awesome though.

Damn,if they only would offer exchange of the ordinary Stone/SP for the ones with the buitl in speaker and a little payment.

as long as they discontinue the old stone and stone plus would be fine. (so they stop flooding they're productS) i thinks it looks pretty neat with grey/orange tone and very nice they doubled the battery life.

ssjmichael
Jan 07 (2008) 01:31PM
Yeah these are definitely nice for what they are. I mean, double the battery life and even lower prices for the Zen Stone Plus. I paid 69.99 for my Zen Stone Plus and this is being released 10.00 cheaper.

I do see too much overlap now though. I think they should discontinue the older Zen Stone/Plus models, and just keep these. The difference in price between the Stone and Stone Plus (10.00) also bothers me a bit.

Wow, I gotta stop buying bargain-priced refurbs as backups. Technology outpaces that strategy.

Love speakers for podcasts and audiobooks, hope it's loud enough. Separate speakers are a little bit too unwieldy.

It's a good idea and I'm sure they'll sell(I wouldn't mind owning one actually!) but I still have hope albeit not much for a new ZVM replacement of some kind.

I dream about a flash based ZVM that's thinner than the old one, has 64GB of memory and has a 3" screen all for under $300. Any chance of that being unveiled soon? XD

Jan 07 (2008) 01:46PM
So now I'm waiting until CES 2009 for a replacement for my good ol' Zen Vision:M?

C'mon Creative... you won't fix your stock price with just these little suckers and a half-assed Flash-based Zen.

How about something truly INNOVATIVE, like a PMP with built-in X-Fi?

ssjmichael
Jan 07 (2008) 01:49PM
As mentioned over at ABi, a new zen is coming "later"

As for the X-Fi player, I mentioned yesterday that it will likely be delayed till the end of the year.

I think they made the TravelSound ZEN Stone pretty obsolete by making this player.

The player itself looks great though, you can't get a better player in such a small package! (If the speaker sounds reasonable, off course)

Varuna
Jan 07 (2008) 02:13PM
Well :

Size not the same..
A Bit Fatty... A big Stone they should have called it instead of that 'with built in speaker' ..

Otherwise.. It gives a good feel to it..

+ Metallic (rather than the toyish) color now !

Hey EnzoTen from the ABi reported in his CES coverage updates that another new ZEN will be announced later!

We've still got hope!

edit: whoops, didn't read ssj's comment. he was earlier

Looks like Creative may have their biggest hopes pegged on the inPerson video conferencing device.. though I doubt sales will be what they envision. A nice touch-screen mid-sized PMP would be a nice revelation.. we can always hope. =)

Single speaker Stone variants really don't do anything for me personally.. a bluetooth enabled device OTOH would have my attention.

You can get more innovative players from china , Uxcell etc , who needs these new players?, they are ten a penny , we have more capacity and speakers on mobile phones .
Non Creative , Video phones have been tried before by Amstrad , ended up clogging bargain bins .

Jan 07 (2008) 03:27PM
When the guy said a zen will be announced later...

does he mean later today?

or like.....LATER later (being months)

CardsFan
Jan 07 (2008) 03:33PM
I hope they don't have all their hopes pinned on that inperson device. And I hope he meant later like today or tomorrow. I'm so close to just buying an Archos 605 80GB

Woembah
Jan 07 (2008) 03:40PM
he wrote a after his message and I think he only would do that If the player will be announced still during this CES. There is no reason of being happy otherwise.

Just adding to SSJ's comments just up above

If what his sources tell him are true with the X-fi player coming at the end of the year, as much as this may suck, i think i'll just have to wait out for that

The new 'rumored' Zen i bet will be great, but with all this new audio technology they're doing, i would of expected for it to be put in.

however, Creative still could shock the world! And have the wifi X-fi SUPER FLY! Super duper Zen, which cooks breakfast >_>

But still SSJ if your sources have been reliant before hand i would have no reason to doubt them

I wonder if creative could tmpt me away from the player at the end of the year

Jan 07 (2008) 04:47PM
Umm.. price cuts across the board (dap/pmp) would have been better along with this release..

I know all technology products get better, but honestly.. has anyone heard the speaker.. does it sound good?

My laptop speakers tend to sound ratty after a couple of years so internal speakers aren't necessarily the best thing on a dap/pmp, IMO.. I think a BIGGER price cut and coming with a case/clip would have been a better choice.. (stone plus)

Woembah
Jan 07 (2008) 05:00PM
Well everyone who thinks the speaker on their mobile phone is sufficient will probably find the internal speaker pretty okay. And there are quite some people who don't care about quality as long as there is sound.

I want a good ZV:M replacement, not a stone with speaker (-_-)
the speakers are super annoying, I'm already sick of those punks in the train, bus or metro listening to their crappy music out loud.

Jan 07 (2008) 05:20PM
I have to commend creative for such an amazing improvement. The doubled the battery life and added a speaker. I have to see it before I complain about a the thickness. But does anyone know if they kept aac and added id3 browsing. Also is there a 4gb model. Maybe can sell my old stone plus fore one of these. Really good job creative and I hope you release another player at CES this year.

ssjmichael
Jan 07 (2008) 05:28PM
Yep there is a 4GB model and I believe it does support AAC. No ID3 tag browsing though.

Jan 07 (2008) 05:35PM
they need to revive the M

Jan 07 (2008) 06:36PM
Well, its official..i am moving away from Creative products. The addition of a crappy little speaker on a crappy little player means nothing to me. I've always been very happy with creative products but they seem to be transitioning away from being the Cadillac of mp3 player to being the Kia of mp3 players. I am done with Creative.

Jan 07 (2008) 06:46PM
That's ridiculous.

Jan 07 (2008) 06:48PM
you are all being a little too negative. they released ONE player SO FAR, and you are complaining. patience please, we have been informed another player is coming - so stop wingeing.

if this thing was $50 AU i'd take it, but i can see it being more like $120 AU still, it would sell well overseas.

and double the battery life, thats great.

Igottago
Jan 07 (2008) 06:57PM
oh so they are releasing another player? I think its gonna be what we've all been waiting for...the Zen plus plus with a built in mono speaker and a new font.

ltTHREE
Jan 07 (2008) 07:04PM
i dun get the hating.
doubled battery life + speakers and you guys will expect the thickness to stay the same?
i think this was a great release, espcially with the pricing.

moorey
Jan 07 (2008) 07:08PM
agreed, but if you dont use speakers then they are useless, but then you shouldn't have bought that player....oh wait - i just proved myself wrong, in a good way.

IMO get rid of the + versions.
no ID3 browsing, so whats the point?
and it competes with the ZEN V

and yes "Igottago" multiple sources have said there will be another player

ltTHREE
Jan 07 (2008) 07:10PM
i agree. i think the + versions are bad lookin compared to the original stone series.

Creative is a huge disappointment so far for me. I won't be expecting anything from them anymore.

WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT CREATIVE!!!!

Jan 07 (2008) 10:01PM
Creative = fail.

Zensen
Jan 08 (2008) 12:46AM
the speakers are cool and I think this stone version is the best yet with the power usage but like most of you, you were all expecting a zvm replacement but I was doubtful that news of one would come from CES and thus i don't really feel let down.

I could grab one of these for a trip overseas actually as they are small enough to be used at a gym and for hiking and not too expensive if i were to get mugged

But I love my zvm and I want a replacement but hey maybe its a good thing. save my money

CosmicMessenger
Jan 08 (2008) 09:52AM
The Stone is so small, who would even think about putting speakers on it?? Well creative did.

ssjmichael
Jan 08 (2008) 02:38PM
There's actually a chinese clone of the Zen Stone Plus with built-in speakers. It manages to keep the size small though unlike this one. I'm sure it's mainly because of the battery increase why they decided to do it. Not sure if it's a fair tradeoff

Zensen
Jan 11 (2008) 11:12PM
ssjmichael, thats some horrible images of the stone and muVo that you posted on dapreview.. that outline just doesnt do it justice even if it weren't the best news to come out of CES.

ssjmichael
Jan 12 (2008) 03:08AM
Wow, what the hell. I didn't even notice it had jagged edges. I'm surprised no one else mentioned that though. It'll be fixed right away. So sorry.

Jan 12 (2008) 03:15AM
Alright it's fixed. I don't eve know how that happened (I promise it wasn't intentional). I copied the image from Creative's site and pasted it in my program. I didn't do any manual cropping or anything. I just can't believe I didn't notice it was like that. Kinda embarrassed about that

Thanks for letting me know!

(still surprised no one said anything, eek)
