While we mainly focus on DAP's and related audio products from Creative, I thought I'd write something up about Creative's upcoming Video Chat device that was leaked through the FCC. It's called "InPerson" and it will be geared towards families, and businesses alike. The form factor should be around the size of the Asus EEE PC, if not smaller. It'll have a built-in wide-angle lens camera that will record video in H.264, and display it on the devices' 7.0" screen, or through TV-Out. It's connected through the built-in Wi-Fi, but there's also a standard ethernet connection on board. ![]() Not too many details are known at this point, but I think it's safe to say this will also support the most popular media codecs available. I'm a bit shocked that Creative is taking a risk on such a niche product like this. The idea for a videophone like this has been around for over a decade, but none have really taken off. The built-in Wi-Fi takes it to new levels, but I'm still wary about how well it will do. We'll update you as we learn more about this device. Keep in mind, this is not being touted as a PMP, so don't get too disappointed by this product. I'm sure Creative will have something more appealing to us Zen fans at CES in January. Dec 19 (2007) 03:37PM | - No QWERTY Keyboard considering the space - Don't know if it will do Web Browsing or anything related. - Design not appealing (to me).. its a bit Big and (fat ?) - Not something I would carry around (not portable solution) just for Video Chat device. - Don't know if it will double as a media player, and if it does its not gonna be something which people will like to carry. - It's a RISK creative is playing with.. and I don't know if they will get sales they want. + Pretty neat concept and idea. + Camera and Features seem good on what they do. + As usual excellent big screen. + ... ?? |

Dec 19 (2007) 03:41PM | Any idea on memory capacity? SSD (Flash) or Hard drive? Hmm.. they had time for THIS, but not a ZVM replacement, pfft! Newsflash, Creative does wifi, finally... yay! |

Dec 19 (2007) 04:24PM | This is like a webcam and a phone built together |

Dec 19 (2007) 04:31PM ![]() | Yep. I'm not even sure it's engineered by the same people who would be working on a next gen PMP as it's more of a video webcam type of device. |

Dec 19 (2007) 05:10PM | why not introduce a wi-fi mp3 player? |

Dec 19 (2007) 05:19PM ![]() | Maybe they will. They haven't announced anything yet. This is merely leaked info due to an FCC inspection. |

Dec 19 (2007) 05:50PM | I think it looks pretty nice. Considering it's a normal phone (NOT a cellphone) it looks very decent and modern. Why do you lot need a portable telephone with a qwerty anyway? It's meant to just stay in place in one area, like a normal, old fashioned phone. Lol. |

Dec 19 (2007) 06:35PM ![]() | The lack of keyboard is a little strange considering how much space there is on the front of it. |

Dec 19 (2007) 08:25PM | - It doesnt look portable, more like something you leave on your desk. - Not designed for being a media player - I dont know if this is for the mainstream market, maybe for Asia only? - Does it have a battery? I dont think there are really enough people who will buy this. You can get a webcam for like $50 and it will do virtually the same thing. And this thing doesnt work on phone lines - you still need internet, and who has internet that doesn't already own a PC. Maybe itn is for businesses wanting to do conferencing? Damn....i want to see an eeePC competitor just like that, with a keyboard and a less huge camera. I would buy that in a flash if it had Ubuntu. Though i realise that this is a completely different thing - i was just thinking. ssj: can we see the source where this came from? thanks |

Dec 19 (2007) 08:43PM ![]() | If you click for more pictures I provided links to both Gizmodo and engadget. I'm not sure where either got it from, but it does derive from FCC's site. |

Dec 20 (2007) 12:53AM ![]() | I've been waiting for a video phone since the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey in 1968! Not a new concept by any means.. Looks like a nice device, the problem is ubiquity. Like the Zune Social, these kind of things only work in a substantially useful way, when they hit a critical mass. The only way that could happen is if they were mandated for use in every home. |

Dec 20 (2007) 09:31AM | Moorey, Take a look at the Engadget gallery: [Linky] The second photo shows the right side of the unit and what looks like an SD card slot. Knowing the size of an SD card slot it can be determined this is about 6 SD card slots deep. That is not that big. I would caution everyone to wait for an official announcement on what this is or what it does before you trash it in a forum where these comments will be archived and searchable. Just imagine the disservice you are doing to Creative by trashing their product before they have a chance to put it in front of customers. Those customers will then search on-line and get a negative impression of the product. |

Dec 20 (2007) 06:42PM | i wasnt trying to be pessimistic, i am just saying what i think is true. I wasn't trashing it, i think its a good product, but one with a small market. I hope it succeeds, yet i don't see many people buying one I dont think Creative has this targeted at the 'home' market either, and it is intended as a product for Asia. |

I think this on will take on the Iphone, and hopefully it will have some specification the Iphone can't handle like the time of the zvm30gb vs the Ipod 30gb 5gen zvm was so much better, but it just could get on the market cause of the well-known-Ipod creative will have to get out there !! greetings |
