[ image disabled ]I'm so excited to be the first to bring everyone this news. The name of Creative's newest player will be..*drumroll*..Simply the Creative ZEN. Many of you have been wondering if Creative's new player will be a replacement to the Vision:M, or a successor to either the Zen V Plus, or Zen Vision W. I'd have to say the ZEN is a little bit of each. It has the ZVM's 2.5" screen , flash memory like the ZVP, and similar controls to the ZVW. Here's the full details of the ZEN: Features:
I don't know about you, but the ZEN looks gorgeous. It's quite thin, and looks very much like the Meizu M6, which is exactly what I've been looking for from Creative in a flash player. The interface looks to be revamped from previous players. The screen is also vastly improved over its predecessors, having 16.7 million colors, compared the Vision:M's 262,144. Along with the Cowon D2, that is the highest amount of colors I've seen for a 2.5" display. Another great addition to the ZEN is the support for AAC files, such as those from the iTunes Plus store. Finally, battery life is very impressive at 25 hours and 5 hours for video. The ZEN will officially debut at IFA starting August 31st, and should be released sometime in September. You can pre-order them right now from Amazon (see link below) A little tidbit about the naming of this player. As much as Creative would like to forget it, they already released a player called the Zen in the past. I'm not sure why they released a new player with that same name, but I'm too busy drooling to worry about that. Once again, we've been the first to show you a new Creative player, and that's why we're the best Creative Fansite around. More pictures after the jump! [ Read the rest ... ]

Aug 28 (2007) 06:00AM ![]() | HOLY CRAP. THAT IS SEXY!!!! That is the best looking Zen i have ever seen. Now all they need to do is add a bigger screen and a hardrive to make a replacement for the W Damo |
| J234
Aug 28 (2007) 06:04AM | Hopefully this isn't the only player they announce. What about everyone who needs more than 16gb. We want hard drives! |
| Damo.
Aug 28 (2007) 06:07AM ![]() | I reckon on the 31st they are going to release a 60gb plus hdd player. Damo |
| ʇoɔspɐɯ
Aug 28 (2007) 06:08AM | Wow.....well if across board releases are supposed to be coming that is a damn good start. I like the inclusion of a SD slot but has to come up a bit in capacity to compete with my 60Gb M |
| ssjmichael
Aug 28 (2007) 06:08AM ![]() | Yeah, there will be another player (or two) from what I've heard. |
| J234
Aug 28 (2007) 06:13AM | Ah ok, that sounds good. |

Aug 28 (2007) 06:16AM | i take it that it doesnt work with the z600/500? $300 for 16Gb flash - that isnt too bad is it. [ edited Aug 28 (2007) 06:17AM ] |
| Damo.
Aug 28 (2007) 06:16AM ![]() | Why not? would it be too wide? Damo |
| DaeScope
Aug 28 (2007) 06:17AM | Hopefully their other product will just be like this one, but with a hard drive! Man that device looks sexy and slim! Just wished the screen was a bit bigger say 3inch |
| moorey
Aug 28 (2007) 06:18AM | i think so...look at the ZVM screen - its almost the whole way across the 'ZENs' screen is that same size plus all the controls |
| ssjmichael
Aug 28 (2007) 06:18AM ![]() | Thanks for the 16GB link. I knew there was one! 300 for 16GB's of flash with an SD expansion slot is not bad at all. |
| Damo.
Aug 28 (2007) 06:22AM ![]() | So that means it is the current highest capacity flash player even though the 16gb V Plus was because this has up to 24gbs! (If you get an 8gb SD) Damo |
| Damo.
Aug 28 (2007) 06:29AM ![]() | Doesn't the D2 have 16 Million colours to? Damo |
| ssjmichael
Aug 28 (2007) 06:35AM ![]() | Oh yeah you're right. I totally forgot about the D2 right now The 16.7 million that Creative has still is more than the 16 million that Cowon writes on their page. Unless they just left out the .7. *Shrug*. It's 6am here and I was about to go sleep right before I found this. So happy we're the first to provide it and in a somewhat coherent way, lol. I'm in one of those hyper/exhausted modes [ edited Aug 28 (2007) 06:38AM ] |

Aug 28 (2007) 07:16AM | Yep, I'm on board. It's a nice looking player. And my main [censored] about the ZVM is its boot-up time. I think a high-capacity flash player is in my future. I know some of you have tons of music - but 16gb should be enough for me, especially if I can simply write a movie to an SD card on the rare occasion I'm gonna have the time to actually watch one. Aug 28 (2007) 08:59AM | Man, i bought the Meizu m6 8GB two weeks ago, and now Creative show this?I need a travel machine(or just hope that the meizu launch the firmware asap). Anyway, this look hot!But I am still hopping for a HDD Dap from Creative. Please!*puppy eyes* |

Aug 28 (2007) 09:15AM ![]() | I personally prefer ZVM over this. |

Aug 28 (2007) 09:25AM | very nice!! I can't imagine that this will replace the ZVW, as the screen is so small. If it supports SDHC, then you can have 32GB of flash...not baaad. I'm not the biggest fan of PMP's, but I'm impressed! |

Aug 28 (2007) 10:21AM | good player....before the nano update...lets see how they roll on the marketplace. Nice use of standard USB and SD expansion. Hoping it's SDHC. Control are good. not that touchstrip suckage on the VM. (thanks good is not a touchscreen, too.) I dont like the UI, thought. from what I see. Nice bring the heat on HDD now, Creative !!! |

Aug 28 (2007) 10:32AM | I haven't noticed this on Creative's link about the player [Linky] but is this MSC/MTP? Guessing from the SD card slot (also SDHC?), that it is. It is a nice DAP, just got a D2 not too long ago, but I will look at Creative again in the future when I need a new DAP. |

Aug 28 (2007) 10:38AM | byebye clix2 8gb (it's not even out yet in the us) welcome mister zen! Damn I've waited for a player like this for months. |

Aug 28 (2007) 10:39AM ![]() | Wow, things just keep getting updated! Now it's on Creative's page, and thankfully Amazon's info about video was a bit incorrect as it does support Xvid and Divx files without transcoding, woohoo! |

| Ron4540
Aug 28 (2007) 11:03AM | Actually it looks like the support is for iTunes plus tracks -- these are the DRM-free iTunes tracks. |

Aug 28 (2007) 11:05AM | Just out of curiosity (and it's probably to start asking questions, but why don't I get the ball rolling?), From the 360° demo, it appears there's no dongle, how then would you do video out? |
| Bitshitter
Aug 28 (2007) 11:16AM | So, is the GUI customizable, or is the red the only colour?? Customizable GUI's have become a standard feature for Creative, in recent years... |

Aug 28 (2007) 12:13PM | I think that 16 gb is good enough at least there is a memory expansion slot. I believe there is no limit to the maximum memory the slot can take. furthermore this player is slimmer in size and supports itunes too.! |

Aug 28 (2007) 01:02PM | Think i'd still prefer my ZVM over this but it's a really good start. It's still the Sammy P2 for my next DAP at the moment though (want to try something totally new). I'll have to see what else Creative pull out in the next few days at IFA first. How are the controls on the W if they're similar to this? Not tried 1 before. |
| CardsFan
Aug 28 (2007) 01:09PM ![]() | I really like what I've seen so far. I really was hoping for more memory but I like the SD slot. You can double the memory on it for 125 bucks or so, just keep all your movies on SD cards and put your music on the player. |

Aug 28 (2007) 01:09PM | To me this is the perfect layout for a player. Nice big screen but overall small player. Same format as the Meizu and Teclast players, but coming from Creative this should really outperform those brands. The only thing that could ruin it for me is if it was MTP only. Crossing my fingers. |

Aug 28 (2007) 05:11PM | IMHO, this is NOT a ZVM replacement. The design sort of looks like a Zune in a mini ZVW form factor. One thing that would put it back in the running for ZVM replacement: 32gb @ $299-- 16gb, No-way, also.. I would have started out @ 8gb... even if they couldn't get a 32gb device released in '07 Also, I say boo for abandoning the ZVM form factor... Making the ZVM longer/wider (not thicker) but keeping it's vertical form factor might have been a compromise. Who agrees with me? |

Aug 28 (2007) 07:01PM ![]() | Nice job keeping up with the news, Michael... This is IMO definitely an excellent replacement for the 30GB ZVM.. assuming SDHC support, for maximizing the total allowable memory. Disappointed that this does not include some form of wireless capability (pref. bluetooth).. but it has a lot of positive aspects that may justify many an upgrade for ZVM owners. |
| ssjmichael
Aug 28 (2007) 07:07PM ![]() | Bluetooth is one of those features that many people won't take advantage of though. The selection for bluetooth headphones isn't that great right now and we just haven't seen the BT revolution that many of us were expecting to see since last year. I think it'd be nice to have it, but I don't think investing in something for a small amount of users would be worth it for them, especially in their current financial situation. |
| Utew
Aug 28 (2007) 07:26PM ![]() | I agree, Michael... you stated that well... I do think we'll start seeing more bluetooth support very soon.. and if Apple supports it on their new player(s).. it will become standard quite fast... In my mind the Samsung P2 has the upper hand over this new ZEN.. in user interface and bluetooth support.. the Zen wins in total memory expandability and the usual excellent video codec support... this will be a tough call for me... Aug 28 (2007) 07:32PM | ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! Great looking player. It really seems like Creative thought this one out before just throwing something into the market. HOWEVER... my issues: 1) 16GB won't be anywhere near enough for the consumers that use 30/60/80GB players. 2) Can the screen viewing be rotated? (like the V/V+) Mounting a horizontal player in my car could be an issue. |
| troxy
Aug 28 (2007) 08:03PM | Omfg, I can hardly believe this is true! This very day, I was playing with my Vision:M thinking "hm, this thing is kinda fatty". And now this, the perfect replacement! It's looks like the new Zen addresses almost all of the ZVM's shortcomings: - Sleek design. - "Clicky" buttons instead of touch strip. - Standard usb jack instead of a lousy dongle. - Expansion slot. - Flash instead of hdd But the big question is: will we finally have true UMS support? |

Aug 29 (2007) 12:12AM ![]() | I wasn't expecting UMS at all since it is a PlayForSure Device. The Stone was UMS because there simply was no need for any MTP with the lack of subscription support. I wish it had a dual system, but it looks to be just MTP. |
| Utew
Aug 29 (2007) 01:20AM ![]() | Told myself I wasn't buying another MTP-only player... it isn't too late to make this dual UMS/MTP via firmware mod, but knowing Creative it probably isn't in the cards. ... I also fear many will pass due to it's lack of flexibility in that regard... |

Aug 29 (2007) 01:40AM | wait what is mtp and ums? what does the zvm have? |
| Utew
Aug 29 (2007) 01:56AM ![]() | ZVM is MTP.. it needs Windows basically... though if you utilize the data partition on your ZVM it communicates via UMS... The advantage to UMS (MSC) is that your player acts as a drive letter.. the same as a USB thumbdrive.. no software needed... so UMS compatible players work on ALL operating systems.. not just Windows.. ![]() |

Aug 29 (2007) 02:16AM ![]() | I never understood the lack of a dual system. I don't think it's the most difficult thing to make, but they could definitely benefit from doing so. I mean MSC opens the doors up to many Mac owners who otherwise would probably just get an iPod. 9 times out of 10 a mac owner will get the iPod, but that 1/10th could certainly help Creative and will definitely pay for the cost of working on that system. Besides Mac users, I know tons of Windows users who refuse to get an MTP device. Many of whom have had trouble getting these players to work properly on their pc. [ edited Aug 29 (2007) 02:19AM ] |

Aug 29 (2007) 02:40AM ![]() | Therein lies the crux.. MTP protocol, though having some advantages in metadata content recognition.. complicates the overall communication system courtesy of more complex software needs.. and has been the biggest sore spot in Creative's (and others) Support dept.. I'd bet. MSC just works in a more simplified manner and is the de facto standard. Microsoft and big media's DRM restrictions have made this an issue that shouldn't even exist. Ok, no more ranting on this from me.. ![]() |

Aug 29 (2007) 03:17AM | Creative seems to be rather stubborn on the issue, and I don't understand why. Most companies, in fact all of them besides iriver that i'm aware of that have MTP support also provide some kind of option to connect in UMS mode as well, either by choice or automatically on a non-windows system. If this had either of those options i'd get it in a heartbeat, but without it I probably won't. Partly because it would probably involve buying a new motherboard to get MTP working on my system, and party because of principal. It sucks, because I know i'll be missing out on a great player. EDIT: I just remembered that the Clix2 does offer that option. There you go. [ edited Aug 29 (2007) 03:19AM ] |

Aug 29 (2007) 03:25AM | Cool, but I was hoping it would resemble the ZVM. We'll talk when they release one with a 30 GB+ capacity. |

Aug 29 (2007) 04:50AM | Well, it was definitely a motivating factor. Now I have to seriously consider this thing. |

Aug 29 (2007) 06:39AM | Oh well.... no Zen for me, I kinda though that it might be msc because of the SD slot....oh well, I guess I'll pick up the P2 instead, hopefully it'll come in 16gb's by mid september This thing is gorgeous though, and certain elements of it's design remind me very much of the Archos 404, it is sort of a mish mash between the Meizu M6 and Archos 404. |

Aug 29 (2007) 07:04AM | its still made in malaysia... funny.. i wonder if the buttons light up like the buttons on the zvm.. |

Aug 29 (2007) 08:34AM | MTP only, and Creative continues with it's love affair with MTP. I am currently running on a Vista OS, and have no issues with MTP, still it would have been nice for the MSC option. This is what I default to on my D2 and all my DAPs I have, or have owned on the past (with the exception of my ZSP) were MTP/MSC. My D2 (current), my Rio Carbon. Honestly though, if I hadn't decided to purchase a D2 recently, I would've considered this DAP. Although, I like my D2 a lot,, but this is a great looking DAP with expansion capabilities. Aug 29 (2007) 05:48PM | MTP is just fine for me (I use XP:MCE and Linux Ubuntu) as I can just dual boot to transfer, or install libmtp on linux. |

Aug 30 (2007) 12:25AM | HFS. Some Creative guys went back to design school. That thing's smokin'. Unfortunately the specs are screen are underwhelming... |

Aug 30 (2007) 10:13AM | Smaller than a credit card? I can probably shove it in my wallet. Maybe it's their flagship as it has quite a simple name. Zen. You won't call it in acronyms anymore. And they took out the 'vision' part as most likely it's less on the vision side than the music side (though the 16M screen makes me think twice). [ edited Aug 30 (2007) 10:17AM ] |

Aug 30 (2007) 10:30AM | Ah, so much for earphones sticking out my wallet. By the way, has there been any notice that this supports album art? Or is album art mandatory in MP3 players nowadays that it needs no mentioning? |

Aug 30 (2007) 06:20PM | Will it have TV-out? And will it be able to play videos with higher resolution than 320x240?? ![]() |
| ssjmichael
Aug 30 (2007) 08:34PM ![]() | Not yet known for both questions. I do think it will play higher resolution video, but I really am not hopeful about the TV-out. If Creative had intentions for that I believe we would have seen it from the start. Very rarely do they add such a big feature by means of a firmware upgrade. [ edited Aug 30 (2007) 08:35PM ] |

Sep 01 (2007) 03:24PM | Magnificent player!! Don't see anything about having an AC adapter available. Really need to have one of those, or will the Zen Micro USB AC adapter work. I have no idea where I'm going to get $300 ![]() |

Sep 11 (2007) 06:57PM | zenwolf, the ZEN Micro USB adapter should work. Also the ZEN universal adapter that come with the USB to ring-tip adapter should work as well. |
