Creative Announces the Zen Stone Plus

[ image disabled ]Thought the Zen Stone was Creative's answer to the iPod Shuffle? Yeah so did I, until I learned about their updated model: the Zen Stone Plus. This is the true competitor to the Shuffle. It is nearly the same size as the Stone but it has a screen, double the memory, and a lot more features:

  • Capacity: 2GB
  • Display: Blue OLED (64 x 64)
  • Audio: MP3, WMA, and Audible
  • FM Tuner
  • Voice Recorder
  • Stopwatch
  • EQ Presets
  • UMS/MSC compliant
  • Battery Life: 9.5 hours
  • Dimensions: 55.6 x 35.4 x 12.8 mm (21g)

Announced just a month and half after the Zen Stone, I have to wonder why Creative didn't just come out with this model instead. The Stone Plus will come in the same colors as the original, including black, white, green, blue, red, and pink. One noticeable downside is the battery life, which is just 9.5 hours. The Zen Stone Plus will retail for $99 Singapore Dollars, or just $64US.

We're the first to bring this news to everyone and that's why we're the best Creative fansite around!

Wow! Great feature set on a tiny player. Definitely kills the Shuffle. Even has an FM tuner ... pretty cool

I think I just heard a noise.......it was the sound of everyone who bought a Stone rushing back to the store to return it. Why didn't they just release this one first, doesn't make any sense to me. It's ok looking but I'm still not interested

mdscriber3
Jun 20 (2007) 07:49PM
Is anyone besides me bothered by the fact that the orientation of this player is landscape and not portrait? Seems it would be awkward in landscape to read the screen and work the controls.

any idea on price?

IDK, Pam think that possibly, 79 bucks right around the Shuffles price.

ssjmichael
Jun 20 (2007) 08:15PM
Wow, they just made their Press Release and the pricing is 99 Singapore dollars, or around $64US! It's still cheaper than the Shuffle even though it has twice the memory, and a display and a lot more features. Sweet.

Jun 20 (2007) 08:17PM

Just about makes it a "must buy."

It think it'll come down to 59.99 once it's released here.

I decided to still write up something just for the Zen Stone. I've been so busy with running this site and DAPreview that I haven't had time to work on reviews. I'm really rusty so the Stone review should give me some room to get things worked out before the Stone Plus version

mdscriber3
Jun 20 (2007) 08:23PM
Their press release says black, white and pink to be released first on 6/22/2007. I was still waiting for the regular pink Zen Stone, which is still backordered/out of stock ... LOL

Wow, $59 is a great price! I was seriously thinking about buying the Zen Stone but this looks a lot better. This should sell very well.

ssjmichael
Jun 20 (2007) 08:37PM
One thing I don't get is why it weighs less than the Stone.

Zen Stone: 25 grams
Zen Stone Plus: 21 grams

mdscriber3
Jun 20 (2007) 08:53PM
... that being just a hair bigger and having an FM tuner in it.

Now, also the question is will there be a 4GB version? Considering there is a box check off for one on the Zen Stone motherboard.

Jun 20 (2007) 08:57PM
Yeah, it's bigger and has more stuff inside. So shouldn't it weigh more not less?

mdscriber3
Jun 20 (2007) 08:57PM
Eww ... the pink is like magenta for the Stone Plus

I like the red and perhaps the white, though.

MICHAEL: You'd think so! But this is Creative we're talking about here ... LOL

the Red, white, and black ones look absolutely gorgeous, the black one especially with the blue oled.

I have to admit that its going to knock out the shuffle, but it would make a lot of zen fans who bought the stone sad.. why didnt they just brng out this model... Why the stone in the first place. Now the sale of Creative Stone is doubtful. Then why did they invest in all the R&D, Production/manufacturing and Marketting of the Stone.. But anyways I'm atleast happy that creative came out with such a small player packed with so many features wven with a screen and for this cheap...

Small enough to hold a music, FM and stopwatch..get to wear it like a watch. all for $69. No complaint from my end. [Linky]

I honestly can't believe the price though. We will see.

This player has a clock too, just saw it over at creative's press release for the zen stone plus. This player may be a great companion for those who want the stone but hesitate to buy it due to the lack of screen. This player is offering more features for those who are willing to pay more for some extra features

will this have like a joystick in the middle like the zvp or will there not really be an interface like that?

ssjmichael
Jun 20 (2007) 10:27PM
It's a D-Pad like the Zen Stone. It moves in four directions and has a button in the middle. Basically it's just like a joystick.

no, i think it uses the volume/fast forward buttons for navigation.

I'm with Pam on this.. not liking the landscape mode orientation...

I'm all for the lcd screen in principle, but it really does ruin the simple, clean design that the screen-less stone has going for it..

Some people are just never satisfied....

I've been waiting awhile for the blue stone to come out. Now it looks as though my wait will continue even longer as I await the blue stone plus- sigh.

Anyway, I like the added features especially the boost in memory and the FM tuner. Still think they should add a clip to the back though.

Jun 20 (2007) 11:26PM
Im torn...very, very torn. My first reaction was to take my stone back to WalMart, but its not full, so why bother with a bigger one?
Besides, the whole point of these bitty screenless players was for the simplicity of it. When you were out on your morning run, you wouldnt be distracted by whatever was on the screen. Hit the button and go. You want something more complicated? Get a ZVM.

mdscriber3
Jun 20 (2007) 11:31PM
Cool idea, KC, with the matching OLED screen colors. That would've been neat.

I think Creative also needs to bring over to the US those EP635's (the lanyard-type EP630s) for these Zen Stones.

stone $39US = $45AU - yet its $89AU
stone plus $64US = $75AU - ???

why must Australians pay so much more??
they really should have released this with the stone

to confirm: its exactly the same size as the normal stone?

Creative should also be given credit for introducing ZSP accessories in a timely fashion, as there are at least 5 cases/skins and a TravelSound 'boombox'. Me thinks the 'boombox', which also works withe the regular Stone, will be a very hot seller, if ALSO reasonably priced.

AND - the ad implies that you can Play and Record simultaneously. Interesting. For the karaoke crowd.

scomooret when the stone+ comes to australia its goin to be around $110AU my guess. around the price of the shuffle, which for a 2gb is competitive.

I like this design over the original stone (a small step in the right direction). Still, they'll need to compete on price with the likes of sandisk which can do jpgs on their units in similar price point and can swap a "AAA" size battery. I still don't understand why they couldn't get at LEAST 20 hours out of the battery with lithium ion in this form factor. They're not even doing jpg video, just oled.

They need to add the stopwatch to the ZVM. That's something the iPod has, that the ZVM doesn't

do you see that shuffle ? A screen...!!! take that.

Jun 21 (2007) 10:07AM
one of the reasons why people buy the LCD-less Stone & Shuffle is that they like a simple hassle-free player for jogging & workouts that just plays music. They don't need a screen, because when they use the player they will hardly be looking at the screen...

now that the Stone + has come out - with screen - the standard Stone's use won't diminish much, anymore than the Stone's or Shuffle's use diminished while the Zen Nano Plus, Cowon U3, iriver Clix, and Sandisk Sansa was available.

The Stone + looks to replace the Zen Nano Plus IMO, offering the same capacities and features with a better (more up-to-date) GUI, and for a even better price, while conforming to the latest "Zen" styling that you see with the Zen Vision:M and Zen V Plus. It looks like Creative is trying to do one thing we all have been suggesting: make their players conform to a more familial styling, instead of just throwing out various shapes and sizes that don't seem to relate to one another.

Any time a new portable flash DAP is introduced to the market, the slices of the "pie" get smaller for everyone. But the reasons why a person would buy a LCD-less DAP will still be there, so the original Stone will still sell.....

To answer the question about why Australia is more expensive, I have a theory. Even though it's closer to Asia, where the products are made, I think it's merely a numbers game. The population of Australia is roughly 20 million people or, give or take a few million. There's almost twice that number in California alone. When you're able to ship more goods, the cost of shipping them is able to be distributed out and it doesn't have to effect the cost as much. Just wanted to offer my opinion on why it's more expensive

I love the +, but I love my Stone too, and I don't feel like returning it to Wal-Mart. So I`m keeping it. I`ll buy a + later ;P
