HardwareZone reviews the Xmod Wireless

Have you listened to music in X-Fi yet? My first taste of it was with the Xmod, and Creative's technology has certainly won me over. Creative continues their goal of bringing this technology outside of PC's (it was primarily found in soundcards) and into your home entertainment center.

Their most recent attempt at accomplishing this is the Xmod Wireless system. The Xmod Wireless works very much like Creative's Xdock Wireless. Rather than docking a player (e.g. iPod), you connect any audio source to the main station, and set up the wireless receivers in various locations. Using your remote, you can then control where music is played throughout your house.

Rather than using WiFi, or a newer technology, the transmitter relays music to the receivers via a 2.4GHZ frequency. Many were concerned that this may cause interference among other devices. According to HardwareZone, there's nothing to worry about. They've put the wireless system through its paces and they were pleased with the results:

"For its utter simplicity, it's easy for anyone to brush off the Creative Xmod Wireless Music system as just another audio accessory. However, credits to Creative, we think they do have a strong proposition to sell. The Creative Xmod Wireless Music system lets you install music counters anywhere in your home in very much the same way as how wireless routers let you enjoy wireless Internet. Furthermore, the X-Fi Xmod chip within does enhance sound quality. It can also be the wireless answer for those who have been looking high and low for a way for an affordable solution for wireless rear speakers in their multi-channel home theatre systems."

The Xmod Wireless retails for $199 for the transmitter and one receiver, with additional receivers costing $99 each. You can get it from Creative's official store at that price, or pre-order it at Amazon for $174 shipped.

It's done through hardware.

Sorry for the news drought, although I don't think it can be helped considering there's not a bunch of Creative related news out there

Isn't 2.4 GHz in the wi-fi spectrum already?

I don't know much about WiFi. By 2.4GHZ I assumed this was working on the same technology as cordless phones that have a main station and other cordless stations around the house. I know that isn't considered WiFi. *shrugs*

The Creative website doesn't really explain the setup as much as I'd like. Do you know whether this is similar to Sonos? The biggest drawback I see with the Creative system is a lack of screen on the remote (unlike Sonos and Logitech)...

*picks up his cordless phone and hears music* "meh"

this does have a remote....though not a screen

they should have a device thats plugs into the zv:m, or vision or whatever creative player you have, that will let it act as the remote... that would be awesome! it would just look like the fm transmitters for ipods or something. come on creative, make it, and they will come.
