Zen Wav Officially Debuts

[ image disabled ]We were the first to leak info about the Zen Wav. It wasn't welcomed with open arms to say the least, and some were even wondering if it was a real product. It's definitely real, and Creative has recently added it to their site. The stock photo does more justice to the player than the original scan we had. Still, even with this new image, the design has not won me over. The specs on the other hand are a bit more attractive to me:

Features:

  • Display: 1.5" TFT screen, 65K colors
  • Audio: MP3, WMA, WAV, and Audible
  • Video: Transcoded AVI
  • Built-in mini Stereo Speakers
  • FM Tuner
  • Line-in and Voice recorder
  • E-Book support (I'm assuming .TXT support)
  • Battery Life: 30 hours of audio playback, 20 hours when using speakers
  • Dimensions: 85.0 x 42.0 x 12.5 mm
  • UMS/MSC device

The 30 hours of battery life is definitely nice. If I'm not mistaken, that's due to the Sigmatel STMP3600 chip being utilized. As you can see from the picture, the player comes with an "Acoustic stand". According to Creative, the acoustic stand is "a unique docking station ...that allows the MP3 player to emit rich concentrated sound waves, providing better audio quality and entertainment to the listener". Sounds good to me. The player will debut at Creative's upcoming Warehouse sale in Singapore (May 25th -27th) and as of right now it will only be sold there. The price for the 2GB player is the same as the Neeon 2, at $179 Singapore dollars, or around $117US.

The new features in this MP3 player that we've not seen in previous players are the Volume Limiter and an E-book function which allows users to read their E-book text file and listen to their favourite music at the same time.

Could Creative add the E-book function to the ZVM with a firmware update, which probably is unlikely?

We've had the volume limitation on a couple of previous players Davin. The most unique feature is of course the built-in speakers on a flash player.

20 hrs of batter life when using the speakers is almost un-believable.. but if true, it's quite an achievement.

I get about 5 hrs out of my Samsung K5 on speaker playback..

Would sure like to see this in all black.. or perhaps black with colored accents

Yeah, I got about 6 hours with the K5. It makes me wonder how powerful these are in comparison. I'm all for a black version too, The speakers wouldn't stand out so much then.

i like the ebook functionality. Wonder how much battery that will eat up though, since the display will be on the entire time. They don't post battery life for video, assume it will be on the low end, between video battery life and the 30 hours for audio.

I like the audio life, 2gb is nothing impressive, and built in speakers is a good idea. Still looks like a cheap transistor radio that Radio Shack would have sold back in the 90s.

The silver gadget trend is on it's way out so if there is a black version, they should use that in the promotions instead. Impressive battery life though.

This pic does it more justice than the last one, that's for sure. So maybe it just has a sort of cheapo retro feel to it instead of it being ass-fugly. Those controls really annoy me. I've got to hand it to Creative if the battery life is rated at even 20 hours without speaker play. The ebook support was long overdue. I wouldn't doubt that Creative would be able to get that acoustic dock right, as they are the soundcard gods afterall.

It's good to see Creative making new players but is this yet another product that will take months to get on shelves in the USA ala the Zen Vision M? Has that nice X-Fi speaker system even been released in the USA yet? I feel like creative is shooting themselves in foot by announcing new products and then taking a ridiculously long time to get them to market in other countries including the USA.

It's not coming to the US Arctic, and it will be available in Singapore the debut it's officially shown. I'm sure we'll see a press release then too.

The Vision:M officially debuted in the US at CES 2006 on January 5th. I ordered my player on January 10th from Buy.com and got it on like the 12th. Clearly, the problem with the ZVM was they underestimated the demand the player would have (you can't predict winning Best in Show at CES). They were in stores early though since I got one, there just wasn't thousands upon thousands.

You can see they're ramping up supply. Just look at the rate at which they got the Zen Stone to most major retailers in the US> They had them at Walmart since day 1 (and prior) and on amazon just a couple days later.

They have improved in the availability department, which is a real good thing.

No MTP sidewinder, there's no point over there since subscription services are a N. American thing.

Must say the Wav looks much better in this picture. The speakers look much cleaner and less obtrusive.

it looks better in this picture, but it's still not something i really see myself getting. a black one would be great, ssj.

and it's UMS. that's really great news. i hope they keep it up with future players.

great...but like all creative players:
where the hell can i get one?
releasing players is pointless if i cant buy them!

how long ago was the z500 and the z600 released?

Why TXT support love for this player and not the ZVM, ZVW lines?

I see this as a gaint leap for Creative in terms of battery life and feature set. But if wants to have a standing chance in the US, this little palyer should come with bigger memory and an impressive price tag.

look's ugly, but the battery life is great.

might consider getting one of these or that one with the impressive battery life being sold by samsung
