[ image disabled ]Remember those upcoming players Creative (and myself) hinted at recently? One of them happens to be a player called the Zen Wav. So what sets this player apart from others Creative has released? Well it's a sleek flash player with built-in speakers. Aside from those speakers, the player is very much a follow-up to the Zen Neeon 2. It's the same size, has the same features, and will even sell for the same price: Features:
The player also includes a "Sound enhancing acoustic stand", whatever that means. I really like the idea of the built-in speakers. Last year, Samsung made a nice splash with the YP-K5, which featured a flip-out speaker. The Wav looks pretty decent, but nowhere as nice as the K5. The player is currently available in silver, but hopefully they have plans for other colors (like black!), or perhaps skins like the Neeon 2. The price for the 2GB model is $179 Singapore Dollars, or around $117US. The question remains on whether Creative will release this player globally. They only sold the Neeon 2 in Asia, but hopefully they change fates for the Wav. So far for 2007, we have the Stone, and the Wav. Will either make a ripple in sales? We'll have to wait and see. via, our Forums Thanks elbboc!

May 18 (2007) 03:38PM ![]() | Yeah I can see that. I think it'd look nicer in black (glossy black even), and maybe with the speakers in the back of the player or something. |

May 18 (2007) 03:48PM | If you rode the subway to work you would hate any player created that has speakers. If I could make every phone that plays music via its speaker go away I would be a much happier person. When I saw the ads for the YP-K5 I shuddered with dread. Actually when I saw the ad I thought "are they trying to say the player comes with built in speakers? Nah, no one would do anything that annoying." but I was wrong. Sorry, I love my Zen Vision:M, but I hope every player with built in speakers, no matter who it is made by, fails. [ edited May 18 (2007) 03:49PM ] |

May 18 (2007) 03:50PM ![]() | I think its probably safe to say that the U.S market is interested in high end players so the X-Fi will make a bigger ripple in sales. BTW, I know I am going to regret saying this but I think it might be wise to wait till the iphone hype dies down before they release the X-Fi. |

May 18 (2007) 04:02PM ![]() | honus, you have a choice between playing songs through the built-in speaker, or through the headphone jack. It's doubtful that people will play it through the built-in speakers in public. but that's not the problem of the product, but the person and his consideration for others. It's like complaining about the increased usage (and types) of ringtones on cell phones because some inconsiderate person likes playing them repeatedly in public. [ edited May 18 (2007) 04:06PM ] |

May 18 (2007) 05:21PM | I would've rather seen the current Zen Neeon look instead of the metal *shrugs* But it's all just a matter of personal taste. But it looks like Creative is still kickin'! |

May 18 (2007) 06:12PM | I'm just glad that they haven't toned down the feature set at all. Yay for line-in! Also, looks like the navigation is quite similar to the Zen V. (Joystick and two buttons on the front.) But this time, the left and right sides are evened out. |

May 18 (2007) 07:08PM | Looks a bit outdated tbh, i know what i would have compared to the samsung equivilent, arent they better sticking to a clear line up rather than clouding the situation with loads of random odd job players like this, i think this is better being ditched altogether so more time and investement can be made in develoing the Vision/Vision:M/V/Stone line up. Though at least they aint ditching mp3 players altogether. |

May 18 (2007) 07:18PM | Short on looks and high in price.. (for 2gb anyways) these are substantially below $100 now from Sandisk and others.. Creative can't be serious on that price target-- flash memory prices are plummeting and costs to manufacture are dirt cheap right now and will get cheaper once they fully embrace Chinese fab. facilities. Even Iriver, Cowon and others are looking to take marketshare from all competitors. |

May 18 (2007) 08:19PM | A bit expensive. and a little ugly...... the speaker might be better off at home. i dont think this will boost many sales for creative though. |

This maybe one of the reasons that we didn't see any releases at CES2007 ect, because these players may not have even rated a mention in reports as they lack the WoW factor Anyhow its good to see there is a bit of movement about at Creative, i hope though that there is a WoW player on its way later this year ![]() |

| ssjmichael
May 18 (2007) 09:15PM ![]() | Clearly not proudvision I agree with Pam. I'd prefer the design of the Neeon 2 instead of this. This just doesn't have that nice glossy mainstream look that the recent Zen line provides. [ edited May 18 (2007) 09:17PM ] |

May 18 (2007) 09:37PM | heck, theres always that slim chance that this is one of those players that looks much better in person, we can't have forgotten all of those "it looks like a toy" comments regarding the Zen V. Of course most of us may never see this in person if it is in fact an Asian only release, like the neeon2..... |

May 18 (2007) 10:01PM | i thin creative have released too many players...they are competing with themselves. at least its progress. i really wish they would build a creative shop in melbourne! |

May 18 (2007) 10:45PM | very ugly player, maybe it looks better in real life |
| DapFinder
May 18 (2007) 11:07PM | I think other ZEN fans will agree this is pathetic looking. From specs to pics this is a lame attempt. Meizu is a million times better than this I mean, seriously...SSJ, is this the trump of God ushering in the end of Creative labs? Yikes. |
| rockinamigo14
May 18 (2007) 11:45PM | why do they keep replacing flash players? Zen V, followed by the Neeon, now this...I mean, updates are nice and all, but with all the time they're letting the ZVM run its course, you'd think they could do that for the flash players too. What will be interesting to see is if the X7 or the next Creative HDD DAP comes out first. or the Zune 2.0. |
| ssjmichael
May 18 (2007) 11:47PM ![]() | I think it's just another player that isn't costing them a ton more to make in order to recoup some money for a better future. They're likely using a good proportion of the parts from the Neeon 2 and are just changing the front and adding output for the speakers. Thus it's not a completely new player in that sense and isn't costing them as much as one would. I still believe they have a lot of good players left in them, and I do agree with Dominic that this has the chance of looking better in person than it does here. The speaker grilles on the front are the biggest con as far as design goes. |
| mdscriber3
May 19 (2007) 12:03AM | I was quite disappointed when the Neeon2 didn't make it over here in the States. I think that was a real hot design. Like MIchael said, if this comes in black, it may not be so bad looks-wise. The key feature on this baby is the speaker to share your music with your friends instead of sharing earbuds like Apple/ipod'ers like to do ... ![]() |

May 19 (2007) 12:05AM ![]() | Wish they had put the speakers on either side of the screen for better stereo effect.. I'll be curious to see/hear a review of this one.. needs about 8GB of memory too... |

May 19 (2007) 12:09AM | I think we're past the 8GB flash memory point by now, Utew ... let's see 12GB! ![]() |

May 19 (2007) 12:13AM | Yeah, but really, CL has to come up with some slam dunk daps...and this is not one of them. clearly. If it even exists. |
| ssjmichael
May 19 (2007) 12:13AM ![]() | Creative also needs to jump on the expansion slot bandwagon. An SD (or SDHC) card slot would certainly appeal to many people. |
| Utew
May 19 (2007) 12:27AM ![]() | I agree Michael and Pam, with both of you.... the only problem with a SD slot is the battery life seems to suffer a bit more than from hard wired flash... but it would make it a more valuable device ala expandable memory... one can wish and perhaps it's in store for any further player additions they might be planning... May 19 (2007) 12:55AM | Ooooh yesssss ... love the expandable memory idea. 8GB internal with SDHC card support ... yummy I'm just guessing here but perhaps the smaller capacity flash players sell better for Creative. Actually, they probably sell better for all DAP makers (to the general public, that is). Me ... I like memory and lots of it ... LOL ![]() |

May 19 (2007) 01:49AM | of course this is the player that is very different from other Creative players. It is the first Creative player to have an in-built speakers and also the first metallic player after the ZEN Sleek. However, i think with so many ZEN around, they are kindof diliuting the ZEN brand. |
| Utew
May 19 (2007) 02:38AM ![]() | I had a Sleek (monochrome) when they first came out and liked it quite a lot.. although the screen brightness sucked... and the docking/USB cable was monstrously thick and annoyning as hell, I loved the metal case... |

May 19 (2007) 07:04AM | i wanted a player with a speaker, but a good speaker built in. the ZVW speaker is pretty bad, and by the looks of this, it seems like it would sound about the same. too bad. i was hoping for a new design. also, i think the sound enhancing stand is that. a stand! so you can angle the player upright for better sound. |
| JJ
May 19 (2007) 08:26AM | ok, that is just ugly. Reminds me of a cheap $5 transistor radio from Radio Shack. I think the built in speakers thing is a great idea, but the execution lacks. Just not anything pretty. |
| xtra-sauce
May 19 (2007) 09:05AM | plain ugly, cmon creative, one of the reasons your losing money is your mp3 players look like shit compared to the ipod just get the Neeon 2 and make a better GUI people buy ipod's as they look so sexy and work well. (btw i own a ZVM 60gb and am very pleased with it as i bought mine as its much better thna a ipod) |

May 19 (2007) 10:46AM | My dream player would be very close to a Meizu music card with an sd slot. |

May 19 (2007) 04:12PM ![]() | About time they put speakers onto a creative player Have to admit that picture doesnt do the player any justice at all. It looks a little retro but more so like one of those apple nanos which i dont think is a good looking player at all. Silver is a nice colour though! |
| Harry
May 19 (2007) 05:04PM | Well good going creative releasing players back-to-back.. But they certainly need to concentrate on the looks of the player.. This device looks like an old '90s FM radio.. They could've make it much better with some more memory.. |

May 20 (2007) 03:05PM | Oooh I agree with Nrage, the YP-K3 is absolutely gorgeous and sounds fabulous ... just wish it had 8GB Even my 9 year old loves that one ... LOL She wanted video though (see, I have her trained well). |
| Cody B.
May 20 (2007) 05:57PM | lol...It is pretty ugly, though I kinda like the older look. I have a weird taste in just about anything, that is except for my taste in more high end DAP's (ZV:M lol) So I just think that we should give it a chance. Who knows maybe it has some extra un-announced feature that is in there. Maybe the speakers are not run of the mills, but are good ones. Just give it a chance. |
| Cody B.
May 20 (2007) 06:00PM | You also have to remember that that is printed with INK on NEWSPAPER. Its layered like a Lithograph, so it looks bad on that ink. If we could see a picture online, it will look better. |

May 22 (2007) 10:17AM | Ya know, a 2gb device is poop already with the DIRT CHEAP flash memory.. what happened to 8gb+ units? Investing in a 1-2gb device SUCKS by today's standards.. (I'll make a small exception for Zen Stone, this time) we need to leave video screened 1-2gb devices IN THE PAST, as in 2006. |

May 23 (2007) 11:37AM | ssjmichael, I realize all that. But people are so inconsiderate and rude that I loath any product that makes it easy for them. I hate phones that play music through their speakers and I don't think MP3 players will be much better. Music sounds so bad through the speakers of a phone the only possible reason to use the feature is to show off to strangers what "great" taste you have in music. I haven't heard any portable MP3 speakers that sound good, so I doubt any built in to a tiny portable player will sound good enough to be of any real use. Why would anyone want this "feature"? |
