Creative Announces the Zen Stone

Well this was unexpected! Creative has just announced the Zen Stone, after stating the new player wouldn't come for a few weeks in their conference call two days ago. As we predicted earlier, The Zen Stone is indeed made to compete with the iPod Shuffle. Like the shuffle, the Stone does not have a screen, and can play songs randomly (i.e. shuffle them). You can also play songs in order by skipping through various folders. The good news here is it's going to retail for $39.99 for 1GB; That's 40.00 cheaper than the iPod Shuffle! I really like the design of this player. It's very simple, but like previous Zen players, the glossy finish and curvaceous build are a nice touch.

  • Neat ZEN design looks good wherever you take it.
  • 1GB Capacity
  • Supports MP3, WMA (DRM9) and Audible (Subscription content not supported).
  • Standard mini-USB connection for easy downloads from your PC.
  • Up to 10 hours playtime from built-in rechargeable battery.
  • Choose your colour - black, white, green, blue, red, pink
  • Dimensions: 53.7 x 35.3 x 12.8mm
  • Price: $39.99

The battery life is a bit lower than the Shuffle at 10 hours (compared to 12). The player is a UMS device, meaning it will show up as a standard flash drive, allowing you to drag and drop files on any OS. I'm not sure how successful the player will be, but the value is incredible. I'm sure a lot of people would opt for the Stone over the Shuffle considering it's half the price. Sim Wong Hoo, CEO of Creative agrees as well:

“This is an incredible price for everyone to get a high-quality MP3 player capable of holding up to 500 songs. Whether it's your only player or a second one to take with you anywhere, this price lets you think of MP3 players in a whole new way.”

The player is available right now in black (other colors coming by May 14th) at Creative's US store, and is accompanied by a number of accessories including a silicone skin with a built-in clip, an armband, and a keychain case. There's even plans to release a docking station specifically for the Zen Stone. The TravelSound Zen Stone as it's called will dock the player and will run on two AA batteries good for 20 hours of playback. The mini speaker dock will retail for $39.99 in July.

hmmm....hopes this gives creative a chance but are they advertising this product?

ssjmichael
May 03 (2007) 07:50AM
Too early to say. I think I'll see some ads around NYC like I did for the Zen V Plus, but I doubt there'll be commercials or anything. Advertising is pretty costly, and as much as I want them to take on this risk, it's a shaky one at this stage.

swh look in the pictures, there is a keychain accessory. This guy is small! I'll be getting one to compliment my ZV:M and use for jogs. Come to think of it, for this price I can get a pink one for my wife at the same time...

ssjmichael

When I first saw it, I wondered the same thing Tony. It'd be sweet if it gave a blue light like the ZVM and Zen V. I haven't seen any pics indicating that though, and the battery life would probably be lower if it did. I hope there is though but I wouldn't count on it.

Nice looks... price is a big selling point... too bad it has taken so long between announcement and actual availability of new players from Creative in the past.. many missed opportunities, looks like they got that right this time...

no screen=no interest from me personally, but it could well become a great stocking stuffer at Christmas...

Being all plastic, scratching could be a concern... this will be jammed in a lot of pockets and could lose it's sheen fairly quickly...

ssjmichael
May 03 (2007) 09:44AM
I think it's made from the same material as the Zen V, so scratching really isn't going to be a big issue. The Zen V has a pretty good scratch-resistant coating from my tests on it.

no screen=no interest from me personally

I concur, but honestly, although this would not be for me, I do like the design. I think (sans the screen) Creative did a very good job with the design of the Zen Stone, and for $40, it is a good value as a starter DAP IMO.

Utew
May 03 (2007) 09:56AM
Scratch-resistance will be a factor here, so hopefully it has the same coating.

I really like the simple, yet IMO elegant look of this design..

If I could dream for a second here.. with a screen and bluetooth headphones, I would be on this in a second.

Still.. this could attract a lot of kids.. with the nice looking colors.. IF they can get all flavors to retail.. which has been a problem in the past...

May 03 (2007) 09:58AM
Yes!!! It has a sweet pink which I wanted...is this in store yet? At less than $40, I can afford a pair now

DapFinder
May 03 (2007) 10:01AM
For me, the real inspiration to buy this (espescially (sic) over the suffle) is the price point and quality.
For $39 bucks, who cares if it scratches?
For $39 bucks, who cares if I drop it?
For $39 bucks, you get:
Excellent Creative sound, Decent battery life, USB plug and play with no iTunes hassle.

Honestly, I hesitate sometimes to bring my ZVM with me certain places, because I don't want to get it stolen or destroyed...but I could see my self taking this everywhere.

I see this as a really good option. Can't wait.

The only player i've ever seen advertised by creative was the zen micro. when it was released there were ads all the time on tv especially the music channels and plenty of promotions like this one [Linky]. This is why it became quite popular. Lets hope they do the same with this as it looks as though they could be onto a winner.

haha DapFinder. The S10 is certainly a cute little player. It's a heck of a lot more expensive though.

I'm not sure if it's in stores yet maximus, but one of our commenter's said they saw it in their local Walmart (in the previous newspost), so I'd check there if any place.

there are a lot of folks out there who like to use a small, simple DAP to play their music, or their audio books, that just work and doesn't require a lot of downtime at the PC. Just plug it in, drag + drop, unplug and enjoy!

While I also prefer a LED screen of some sort on my DAP's, I certainly can see how many would want this, especially with the success of the Shuffle generations.

Now all Creative needs to do somehow is advertise the Stone to the consumer so they know it exists as an option to the Shuffle. Please don't let this be a word-of-mouth marketing strategy, like you used with the ZVM, Creative!! Please!!!!!!

I agree with yetz, there should be a Stone with a screen coming along soon after.

I think this is most likely the replacement for the MuVo/Nano(Plus) line and there were MuVo's without screens and then with, so...

I imagine this will be the same. At least if Creative's past history is any indication.

excellent! But what suprises me the most is the lack of subscription support.

ssjmichael
May 03 (2007) 07:34PM
Gizmodo explains why brahma:

According to Creative:

Subscription support would have required much more processing power, which would have increased the cost and price of the player. We felt that the vast majority of folks would have 1GB of non-protected content and so it would be best to go with the great price of $39.99 instead of trying to support everything and offer a more expensive player.

Nope but the controls dolook like the shuffle tho... which is good; doesnt put off people as it looks generically simple like mobile phone key pads.

Anyway I may have to get it even without a screen, 'cos its so cheap and small, plus I dont bother with the ZVM with riding my bike anymore... to bulky, this howver is a nice and cheap and good looking thing to use, plus hopefully the sound quality is there as well... and I need a memory stick anyway.

People are so brainwashed in favor of iPods it is sickening.

Creative would have to something exceptional. Maybe innovate something along the lines of the Sansa Connect with a smaller tighter formfactor and 30GB. Maybe with a huge OLED touchscreen.

I don't know, but they need to do something or they are living on borrowed time.

From reading several posts it appears that stores were asked to hold the player.

Someone commented that Wal-mart would not sell it to him/her even though they had them in stock. Someone else in Kansas was able to buy one at a Wal-mart without any problems.

I went to two local Wal-marts and I was told they were not in stock, however they were expecting NEW stock after Mother's Day weekend.
