Creative Zen Vision W Revealed!

Well, that was quick wasn't it? Shortly after my last newspost on the upcoming Zen Vision W, I was notified that it is actually mentioned in the latest Popular Mechanics magazine. Creative seems to be having quite some fun with revealing new players in magazines (60GB ZVM was spotted in an ad in Maxim).

It appears that the W in the Vision W actually does stand for Widescreen, and what a screen it is. Increasing from 3.7" in the current ZV, to a very nice 4.3" with the ZVW. Do we have to worry about viewing angles, like we had to with the regular Zen Vision? Not according to Popular Mechanics, who state it "has the best screen we've seen on a portable media player" Pretty bold statement, seeing how we have great contenders in the PMP industry, like the Archos AV500 (as well as their newer line), and the Cowon A2. Prices were also revealed. The 30GB will cost $399, which is the same price as the current ZV, and the 60GB version will cost $499. Aside from the increase in screen size and capacity, it doesn't seem like much else has changed. The player does look thicker now, but I think that was to be expected.

This is an epiZENter exclusive, so make sure to check back here when Creative officially announces this player and others. Also make sure to check various magazines, you never know what you may find!

Thanks Bobbs!

Is this going to replace the old Zen Vision, which a dismal screen? Creative has the advantage, since Apple doesn't offer this type of player

Sweet!! While a video-centric PMP is not my style, It's good to know that Creative addressed the crappy LCD issue of the first Vision. Now, with widescreen, they can give Archos and Cowon a run for the money....

Hopefully, with all the ads showing up about the 60GB ZVM, it's only a matter of days before they are announced.....

hmmm....I think I'll go check my latest Field & Herald edition, and see what they have to say about it...

4.3” WQVGA wide aspect high-resolution TFT LCD screen
View 480 x 272 resolution in a wide aspect screen at up to 262,144 colors in your videos.

TFT LCD ... isn't it the same as the ZEN Vision?

seems as though the rumours are true with all these ads and the singapore site shop by capacity section now has a 30gb to 60gb option.

If the viewing angle is good, it should be a winner. Thats the only flaw in the Zen Vision. (Keep your fingers crossed for a line-in video recording feature.)

how does it stack up with the new Archos 604 which was just released with 160 Gigs,4.3" screen ,16 million colours.the market is really getting very competitive

Oh my... I was waiting so long for a widescreen player that supports all those codecs out of the box. CF slot is a huge plus for many photographers who need an image tank (unfortunately my crappy camera uses SD.)

Now all it needs is both MTP and UMS interfaces, folder and tag browsing, nice dock with video in/out, replaceable battery and it will be a dream come true. For added bonus it should run on Linux, but I wouldn't hold my breath for that one

I have a question if Vision W is at $399 for the 30gig, and $499 for the 60gig, how much is the 60gig Vision M going to cost???

ssjmichael
Aug 23 (2006) 08:53AM
If I was to follow that pattern, I'd say $399?

That's how much the 60GB Ipod 5G costs, and I know Creative will like to stay competitive, so it shouldd be around that number.

With the screen being 480x272 will it scale 640x??? xvids I wonder?

Austin Vaughan
Aug 23 (2006) 09:21AM
i really hope that:

1. it supports AC3 audio, else it's useless for me
2. the screen resolution is better than other PMPs on the market (480x272)... just ain't doing it for me anymore when all my movies are encoded to 640px width
3. you can load/access the media library through a MSC interface as well as MTP (as in the ZVM)
4. battery life is as good as the Cowon A2

scarpad: yeah, whatever the actual screen resolution turns out to be, videos of various size are scaled to fit. same as any PMP these days

@Austin:

1.) Creative have not deviated from WAV, MP3 and WMA for years. I fail to see why they will start now.

2.) It might, I hope to god it has a good screen resolution. I thought the last Vision supported 640x480 though, maybe my memory is rusty though.

3.) No chance. I am pretty sure all of the "Western" aimed players are all MTP. There will be no MSC, I'm 99% certain.

4.) We can wait and see, but Creative haven't been good on battery life since the Touch.

It'll be 480x272 which is the same as the Archos AV500 and Cowon A2. Are there any Widescreen PMP's that go higher than that?

The battery should be replacable too.

480x272? So a larger widescreen, but less resolution than the orginal Zen Vision? Are you sure about that?

ssjmichael
Aug 24 (2006) 02:20AM
Yeah, like I said that's the standard for 4" Widescreen PMP's. Check out the specs for the Cowon A2 and the Archos PMP's and you will find the same thing. 640x480 is not a widescreen ratio it's a 4:3 ratio.

No one has really complained much about the video quality on the Cowon A2 or AV500 so there shouldn't be any problems with it.

I'm still looking to find out if there any widescreen PMP's with a larger resolution than that.

If the resolution is actually less than the original Vision's, then we all may be better off getting an old one at a discount.

I like both of these players, but they're too big to be pocketable. Hell, my ZV:M is pushing it.

Scarpad
Aug 26 (2006) 10:29AM
Well I guess it depends on how much Widescreen movies you view. I watch alot of Older TV which tends to be 4:3. Movies on a 4:3 screen like the original vision tend be small due to Letterboxing. For those the W would excel. I actually would get more use out of the original Zen Vision I suppose, but my Dell Axim already has the issue with the viewing angles I would not want to have this again on another device. I'm starting to Lean toward the Cowon A2, it seems to have more features. Just no 60gb version thou. But I'm not sure I want to spend $500 on a PMP Anyhow.

KingSized_Halfling
Aug 29 (2006) 08:42AM
wide screen is cool but if your reslotion get worse I don't know if it's worth it

at least they should give it more features. more extensions it can handle with and maybe WIFI connection possibilities and cellphon options tv-in sho you can record video and an audio -in jack and maybe some game accessories then it would be a very multi functional device and then it would be the perfect pmp

Great to see the widescreen, but where's the support for AC3 soundtracks in xvid files? Adding support for those as well as adding the headphone surround feature they have in their X-Fi hardware to this unit would make it a dream come true.

I love it.
I got One.
Picture is stunning. I can go to bed and see a whole movie. Sound is good and the interconnect with diary and address book useful. If you travel lots like I do, this does the job. Am considering junking the PDA and computer goes in the hold.

Did I say pix are good. Replay onto TV Ok not stunning. With Slysoft software copies of DVDs to watch on plane are simple to do. 2 hour film becomes 900k avi.
Only quirk I can find is that password protection for files is not fully developed. Battery life is acceptable and but its possible to charge from USB a well.

Fits in my pocket. Spend the money on the Zen attenuating earbuds as well then go see the world. Included earbuds are only avarage.

Love it.

I took the measurments and tryed to see how big this thing would be to carry around and i got about the size of a Nintendo DS (orginal) without the flip screen (duh) and the control side with the A,B,X,Y, START and SELECT. same thinkness pretty much. But this just a guess, can anyone who has one take see how close of a guess this is? or have some picture comparing it with something else

I have the venerable ZEN Vision 30GB. Ever since Creative pulled a fast one and disabled the FM record feature, and due to their lack of "creative-ity" in their software development (ZV Explorer), they could put the moon in the new ZV W, and I wouldn't buy it. Not with all the other great devices just coming out.
