Zen Vision Firmware (1.40.03) - Adds Audible, and Album art...Takes away FM recording?

Creative has released a new firmware for the Zen Vision (not Vision:M) and it adds some new features such as Audible, as well as Album art support. The most surprisng part of the details, is it says it takes away FM recording capabilities.

Added Features or Enhancements:

* Supports the playback of Audible Type 2 and 4 tracks.
Important: to transfer Audible content, you must have AudibleManager® version 5 or
later installed. AudibleManager allows you to download, burn, organize, transfer and hear
Audible audio content. Download AudibleManager from [Linky].

Fixes:

* Displays short track titles (one line) correctly
* Ensures proper playback of picture and audio files during a slideshow
* Improves backlight functionality
* Ensures proper Idle Shutdown functionality after you view a photo slideshow
* Names folders correctly when files are appended then copied from your Compact Flash
memory card to your player
* Displays updated Album Art correctly

Notes:

* This firmware removes your player's FM recording feature

I never heard of a firmware taking a feature like this away. If I were a Zen Vision owner, it'd be a tough choice for me. What do you think about this?

Download Here

Thanks, MTN

Wow, thats kindof crazy isn't it. At least its just FM recording and not FM Radio itself. If it was me, I would choose to upgrade my firmware. Can Creative explain why it will take away the recording function?

Yeah, it's really strange FM recording doesn't seem related to any of the things added.

i find using the radio on my M is good, but i dont do much recording. i am always getting into a station at the middle of the song. i would do it if it improves more things than what i would really record off the radio.

well were i'm at i can't get good enough reception to record anything. So i'd say it would come out in the wash anyway.

Besides, radio recording would only be good for radio shows, because the quality is pale in comparision to CD or Mp3 quality (128kbit).

Meh, I never use FM recording anyways.

It must be due to some new regulation. I smell the potent stench of the RIAA...

Idk i havent really used the FM recording Feature at all idk if i will ever doo

Well i think they did it so they can add more features

they can only add soo much to the sytems Rom and too take away a big feature means they may be adding more things sooner or later

I dont think i understand what would bring creative to do that. Functions are added with updates..not taken away, i think this is a very poor choice on creatives part.

RIAA = Recording Industry Association of America

They don't like it when technology allows people to record music. Period. If they had their way, you wouldn't even be allowed to sing in the shower.

kind of reminds me of the first PSP firmware update that gave you an internet browser but took away the emulating capabilities.

People have been recording radio for YEARS, I'm sure the RIAA doesn't like it but is there a serious chance it could become illegal, or is Creative just being extremely overly cautious? I don't see how recording from the radio could actually be made illegal, I don't know why they'd take away this feature, bad move from Creative.

that sucks!!! i dont use fm recording that often, but its often enough to where i'd like to keep it. Honestly, i dont think i'll be upgrading my firmware at all. The features, to me, dont justify the need for me to upgrade at all.

now give me gapless playback, then i'll upgrade in a heartbeat.

This just pisses me off, come on what are you going to do next remove the recording capabilites on every stereo with a radio and tape recorder?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Evenmy grandad did this sort of thing. I quite regularly use the recording capability of my ZVM to record exclusive DJ mixes on radio 1. My biggest worry is if they do this for you in the US its either having my volume capped or having my recording capabilites taken away from me... thats if it were to happen!

Did you guys ever consider for minute that perhaps there aren't black helicopters and goverment coverups involved?

It's just as likely that the firmware is stored in a flash rom storage area of limited size, and in order to add stuff like album art support they had to drop the code for something else. FM recording was probably assesed as least likely to be missed.

Also, the world is a little bigger than the USA. The RIAA doesn't have global domination, so what about the European firmware... is that effected too?

Zen V:M user here, just pitching in my 2c.

I went ahead and got it. Honestly, does anyone "record" anything off the FM radio? I use it all the time, but never recorded anything off of the radio yet.

I use it sometimes but then I miss the beginning of the song and get angry, so I give up.

Typo in the news though. :O ssj get that neat Google Toolbar!

What features did the previous firmware updates (if any) add to the Zen Vision?

I just ordered mine, and I'd like to know about other non-factory features that might otherwise go unnoticed by me, etc. Just curious.

I'm not too upset about the FM recording feature getting removed, the more I thought about it, the more I realized I would have never used it anyway...I barely even listen to the radio anymore...Why would I want to record it? haha

No, the radio recording feature is good, you just call in a request, and then you can record it and it's yours (I know it's a little shady, but hey, FREE MUSIC OF YOUR CHOICE!)

Every weekend, I tape three talk radio programs to listen at different times during the week. Using or not using this feature is not really the question. This is something you have paid for and should not be taken away with out a full explaination. I have email creative several times and still havent gotten a full explaination.
